The Draw for the Spring Meeting on Tuesday 19th April at Prestwick St Cuthbert has been done. It is a large entry and Captain Fiona Roger and Past Captain Helen Faulds (who has just completed the draw) would like you to take note that it is a large entry --- Over 90 entrants. They would both like you to make sure you are at the clubhouse well in time for your tee off and also to move smartly when out on the course to keep the play moving well.

Past West Vets Captain Helen Faulds (Douglas Park), Captain of Scotland's team for this season's Senior Women's Home Internationals was the guest speaker at Saturday's Aberdeenshire Ladies' County Golf Association Centenary Lunch.
Helen was in brilliant form and it was said that she was the best stand-up comedienne ever heard, bar none.

I have now been home a couple of weeks from another lovely trip to Australia. We were extremely fortunate to miss all the dramas that were unfolding in various parts of the country and we saw nothing but blue skies and very high temperatures. Spending many hours in the sea was a very special bonus for late January and early February!


Many of you have already put your entries in for not only the Spring Meeting at Prestwick St. Cuthberts, but also the Summer meeting at Whitecraigs. I look forward to yet more entries flooding in! As I look out the window today, I hope for two equally sunny days!

Secretary Ruth and I attended the February meeting of the SVLGA at Swanston Golf Club last week, chaired by President Jean Thomas, and attended by Captains and Secretaries of the 6 areas in the country. The meeting was short and no problems were reported. The dates for the Mary McKenna Trophy, to be played this year at Craigielaw GC, the Jamboree at Wellingborough GC and the Blairgowrie Meeting are all on your fixture cards and if you wish any information regarding them, please do not hesitate to ask me. Our West Division Championships will take place again at Renfrew GC June 2nd/3rd, and our three matches, two against East and one against Midlands will be played on the dates given on your fixture card.

We wish past captain Helen a successful year as she takes over the Scottish captaincy for the senior home internationals to be played at Tramore GC (South West Ireland) in September.

I hope you have all 'wintered' well and look forward to seeing you in April.

The Scottish European Senior Women's Championship Team captained by Pam Williamson was represented at the Scottish Golf Awards at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Friday 18th February 2011.

Pam Williamson the Captain of last years team and the newly appointed Captain for 2011 -- Past Captain of the West Vets Helen Faulds was also at the dinner as was your webmaster Carol Fell.

We all had a wonderful evening. The Seniors Team did not win the Team of the Year Award  but were delighted to congratulate Lesley Nicholson's all conquering Scotland Home International Team in winning the main award.

Baberton's Pamela Williamson finished as top Scot in the Spanish international senior women's amateur individual championship at Santa Ponsa GC, Majorca today .
With rounds of 88 and 87 for 175, she finished joint 33rd, 19 shots behind the three-shot winner, France's scratch veteran Cecilia Mourgue d'Algue with rounds of 80 and 76 for 156.
Former Curtis Cup player West Vets Suzanne Cadden (Cardross) shared 41st place with scores of 86 and 91 for 177, one shot ahead of the 1975 Scottish women's amateur champion, Lesley Johnston (Gullane Ladies) with 86 and 92 for 178 and 46th place.
West Vets Janice Paterson (Drumpellier) scored 93 and 88 for 181 and joint 51st place.
Barbara Biggart (North Berwick) scored 90 and 93 for 183 and a share of 56th place.
Susan Penman (Gullane Ladies) had rounds of 96 and 91 for 167, four shots ahead of clubmate Dorothy Thomson who had scores of 94 and 97 for a share of 72nd place on 191.
Ireland's Sheena McElroy finished as the top British or Irish player in joint third place on 161 with scores of 81 and 80.
Denise Richards (Wales) came next with 81 and 82 for 163 and a share of ninth place just ahead of another Welsh player, the redoubtable Vicky Thomas with 80 an d86 for a share of 14th place on 166.
The level of scoring suggests that the weather was not what you would expect on the holiday island of Majorca, even in February!

West Vets Suzanne Cadden leads the Scottish way at the Spanish Seniors

Former Curtis Cup player and West Vet Suzanne Cadden (Cardross), and 1975 Scottish women's amateur champion Lesley Johnston (Gullane Ladies) are heading the Scottish contingent at the halfway stage of the Spanish international senior women's amateur individual championship at Santa Ponsa Golf Club, Majorca.
They both returned 86s - 10 shots behind French leader Barbara Jourde - to be joint 31st with a round to go.
Pamela Williamson (Baberton) is sharing 38th place with an 88 and Barbara Biggart (North Berwick) is joint 50th after a 90.
West Vets Janice Paterson (Drumpellier) returned a 93 for a share of 60th place while Dorothy Thomson and Susan Penman, both Gullane Ladies members, had rounds of 94 and 96 respectively.

Bad weather on 2nd Day of the Spanish Senior Doubles cause High Scoring

Baberton's Pamela Williamson and her Canadian playing partner, Diane Williams, failed to maintain a title challenge over today's last round of the Spanish international senior women's amateur doubles golf championship at Santa Ponsa Golf Club, Majorca.
On a day of bad weather, when even the winners, the Spanish pair of Cristina Marsans and Caralina Castillejo, scored as high as an 85 for 157, Williamson and Williams slipped from joint second overnight to a final placing of joint seventh alongside Vicky Thomas (Wales) and Sheena McElroy (Ireland) on 161.
Williamson and Williams had a second-round 87 and Thomas and McElroy an 84.
Lesley Johnston (Gullane Ladies) and Suzanne Cadden (Cardoss) finished joint 24th with an 84 for 172.
The all-Gullane Ladies combination of Susan Penman and Dorothy Thomson had a 93 for 175 and finished 26th.
Barbara Biggart (North Berwick) and Janice Paterson (Drumpellier) returned a 96 for 181 and a share of 31st place.

Scottish Vets Lose a Good Friend

It is with much sadness that West Vets and indeed Scottish Vets, report that Liz Miskimmin, a former Scottish Veteran Captain and President, died on Saturday 5th February after a long illness.
Liz was well known as a very competitive golfer and was a Past President of the S.V.L.G.A and also Honorary President of the Midland Division.

She will be greatly missed by her very many friends. - Go to the SLGA Website to read more

SENIOR SCOTS LADIES IN MAJORCA FOR SPANISH CHAMPIONSHIPS

Seven Scottish players will be in action in the Spanish international senior women's amateur golf championships at Santa Ponsa Golf Club, Majorca this week.
The tournament tees off with a doubles or pairs competition in which Lesley Johnston (Gullane Ladies), winner of the Scottish women's championship as Lesley Hope in 1975, teams up with West Vets Suzanne Cadden (Cardross), a Curtis Cup team player in 1976.
Barbara Biggart (North Berwick) will partner West Vets Janice Paterson (Drumpellier).
Sue Penman and Dorothy Thomson will form an all-Gullane Ladies pairing while Pamela Williamson (Baberton) will have her usual partner, Canadian Diane Williams.
Later in the week the Spanish international senior women's amateur individual stroke-play championship will be held at the same venue.

They split us into division handicap 1-5,6-12,13-18 etc etc

Janice won the 6-12 category 85,87
Jen who struggled on the 1st day of the singles had a better day 2 -- 88

The weather was dry and windy for the singles but still wet under foot after the poor weather on Wednesday for the Foursomes

It was so badly organised but great fun and the courses are fab

SLGA AGM AT PERTH TODAY

REPORT TAKEN FROM THE GILLIAN KIRKWOOD WEBSITE

SLGA Chairman Shona Malcolm (pictured above with Nancy Chisholm) welcomed a full house to the Scottish Ladies' Golfing Association Limited AGM at the Dewars Centre in Perth this morning.
Before proceedings began, President, Emma Wilson, paid tribute to past Chairman, Anne Fraser, a member of Turnberry and Ayrshire, who died in 2010.
The Chairman's report had already been circulated and Shona picked out particular highlights, including the Scottish Ladies' team victory in the Home Internationals and third place in the European Team Championships, the Seniors' team fantastic victory in the European Senior Team Championships and our Junior team's runner-up spot in the Junior Home Internationals. On the individual front, Pamela Pretswell had won the British Stroke Play Championship and Kelsey Macdonald had been runner-up in the British Amateur and had won the Scottish Championship. Pamela and Sally Watson had represented GB&I in the Curtis Cup at Essex County Club, near Boston, Mass.
Shona also touched on the Performance and Development aspects of the SLGA remit, as well as giving thanks to those who had helped SLGA last year.
Finance Director, Lynne Terry, reported that SLGA Ltd had shown a healthy surplus of £61,000 last year, largely due to prudent cost control and some events costing less than expected. The fall in the number of lady golfers was once again evident at 4.1%, but an increase in subscriptions by £1 had absorbed that potential shortfall.
The report of the Scottish Representative on the Executive Council of the Ladies Golf Union, Janet Wake, had also been previously circulated, and Janet highlighted some of the coming events in the 2011 season, in partcular the Ricoh Womens British Open at Carnoustie, 28-31st July, the Astor Trophy (previously Commonwealth Trophy) at Fairhaven 15-19th June and the Vagliano Trophy Match against the Continent of Europe at Royal Porthcawl, 24-25 June.
Election of office-bearers went through smoothly with June McEwan (East) and Liz Scott (South) coming onto the Board. Lorna Bennett takes over from Janet Wake as Scottish Representative on the Executive Council of the Ladies Golf Union. Cara Gruber is the new North selector.
Amendments to Regulation 3.5 governing County Golf had already been disSL;GHAcussed by the County Captains and were approved at the meeting.
A "tidying up" exercise had been performed on Regulation 7 (National Championships and other Tournaments run by the SLGA) and amendments were approved at the meeting.
The proposal that annual subscriptions and fees for 2012 remain the same was also approved, with the caveat that if the amalgamation goes through then subscriptions would be different.

Amalgamation.
Chairman, Shona Malcolm and Chief Operating Officer, Sheila Hartley, presented a cut down version of the road-show that had already been shown to clubs and counties round the Country in the last few months. There were many questions from the floor. Anxiety that the proposals were proceeding at "breakneck speed" with little time to take it in, were voiced. These proposals are still at the consultation stage, and feedback from the roadshows and the two AGMS (The SGU AGM is next weekend) as well as individual feedback from clubs, counties and members will be examined at a meeting of the Amalgamation Committee at the end of January.
 Sheila Hartley asked that any comments should be made to her before 25th January ----- secretary@slga.co.uk for consideration by this committee. Once the proposal has been refined in the light of feedback, a new round of roadshows will be presented to both men and women together in the spring, with a view to holding Special General Meetings of both organisations in the latter half of May, where 75% would have to vote in favour for the proposals for it to go through. If that happens the Board of the new Scottish Golf Limited would be recruited in the summer with a view to the Amalgamation happening on 1st October.
There were questions of costs, representation, who would pay etc. It was emphasised that the proposal was a "very broad brush" at present, the minutiae of how it will all happen has not yet be finalised. Yes, there would be costs, but they would be kept to a minimum, and absorbed by both organisations. Subscriptions, currently £9 for men and £14 for women would probably settle at £11 for both genders.
SLGA County and SGU Area boundaries would remain the same. There is no proposal for Counties and Areas to amalgamate. Clubs would be the stakeholders in the new organisation, with each club's liability limited to £1.
The move to bring the Scottish Golf Union (SGU) and Scottish Ladies' Golfing Association (SLGA) together as a single governing body has gathered momentum with a formal proposal being delivered to each organisation’s members.

New Year greetings from your Captain

Another Christmas passes and a New Year begins.

May I wish every member of the West Vets a very peaceful, successful, happy and fun 2011. The weather may have prevented golf in recent weeks but hopefully before too long the clubs will be dusted down and preparation for another season will begin. I may be the only one who enjoys zero temperatures, sunshine and snow but even I will be happy to swing the golf club before too long!

I have just returned from 10 days in Boat of Garten where the golf course is more like a skating rink! I accompanied my two grandchildren to the snowy slopes of The Lecht ski centre, and in contrast, a week on Monday I shall be landing in Oz to spend some time with daughter Alison. Australian Open Tennis beckons followed by what I am sure will be a very happy few weeks enjoyed in, hopefully, higher temperatures!

I look forward to returning to green pastures and catching up with everyone at the first competition of the year.

2011 MOROCCO GOLF FESTIVAL

When appointed to office -- Fiona then gave her speech:

They say the older you get, the faster times goes by. For a long time I always thought that was such a daft thing to say. I now believe it is absolutely true. I stand here as your new captain of the west division of the slvga, my two years as vice captain having passed in the blink of an eye, following in the footsteps of many excellent captains and hope that I can maintain their high standards.

It is also nice to know that over the last few years I have got to know many of the vets in the other divisions in scotland, and I am so glad that Emma Wilson, Midlands captain and Noreen Fenton, East captain - both areas we have our matches against - I would like to think of as ‘chums’. It brings the divisions closer and we can compare notes and feed off each other.

Helen, you have completed your 2 years of captaincy and have put a lot of time and effort into making sure that our vet’s west division has run smoothly and efficiently, and on behalf of us all, thank you for always doing this with a smile on your face. A job well done.

I have enjoyed working with you and have been treated to lunches and coffees while we have attended to ‘affairs of state.’ you have always been in control of situations even on the very few times that problems may have arisen. I am delighted that you are remaining on committee for the incoming year and I will welcome your help and advice at any time.

I would lastly like to say how well Helen has represented the west division as part of many seniors and vets teams over a number of years. winning the west vet’s championship on several occasions, going on to Blairgowrie to battle for Scottish Vet’s Champion unfortunately eluding her so far. Helen has played in several scottish vet’s teams at the annual jamboree and for the scottish team against Ireland for the Mary Mckenna trophy. A very impressive vets golfer’s cv. May I wish her success in her new role as Vice Captain of the Scottish Vet’s Team currently captained by Pam Williamson.

Election of office bearers for the coming season

I have great pleasure in proposing, as my Vice-Captain - Anna Telfer

With our current life styles it is never easy to persuade people to take on extra commitments, and I was so pleased when I asked Anna some months ago to be my vice captain, that she accepted. I telephoned her earlier this week to up date her on one or two things, and when she heard my voice, she asked me if I was just phoning to make sure that she was still happy to take up her position!!!
I know in Anna, a past club captain at Milngavie and a D & A County Captain, I have a wealth of knowledge backing me up. Not only that but Anna is always to the fore on the golf course, setting herself high standards and achieving them. I am in fact sandwitched between exceptionally good golfers - Helen and Anna - we have spent many fun times away playing in seniors events both home and abroad.

Anna doesn’t have to many free hours in her days, with golf, bridge, grandchildren and many other interests but I know that she will be a great asset to the west division of the SVLGA and I look forward to working with her over the next 2 years.

I would like to propose that Ruth Henderson ( Williamwood) and Sheila Shaw (Lochwinnoch), as secretary and treasurer, having both agreed, continue in their positions.

Maureen Mitchell took Sheila’s position on committee when Sheila became treasurer, and as Helen has said, she now stands down after 2 years on committee. One of the highlights at the AGM was that the committee were delighted to announce that they have asked Wendy Cameron to become an Honorary Member of the West Vets Association and even more importantly, she has accepted.

In Helen Fauld's Speech she stated ---

Wendy has over many years given a huge amount to both the West and Scottish Vets and indeed Scottish Ladies golf.

She has been West Vets Captain, Scottish Vets Captain and President and played in the Scottish Vets team.

She has also been a Renfrewshire Team member, Captain, President and Hon Member of the County.

In terms of SLGA, Wendy has been Chairman, President and is also a Vice President of the Association, one I may say of a very select few.

At club level she is a Life Member of Eastwood GC.

I think you would agree it’s a fantastic record both in levels of time and commitment and obviously someone who is held in high regard by so many people.

Scottish Vets Final Round Up

Quote --- "Blairgowrie – the pinnacle of the vets golfing year as the Tattoo is to Edinburgh Festival - followed on next and was not exactly endowed with glorious sunshine although the sun did come out now and again when it wasn’t being blown to smithereens by a fair to middling gale or soaked. There were some great nett and gross scores, the best scratch being one of the earliest through the door – or was it the earliest? – Helen Faulds of Douglas Park with a 78. This gave Helen - Captain of the West Vets, plenty of time to caddy and support her West team-mate, May Hughes in the Scroggie Cup. Since all of these results can be found on the SVLGA website perhaps this is the time to stop off and enlarge on the Scroggie Cup. It is the main Vets’ match-play event of the year."

Scotland lose to Ireland on Day 3 of the Seniors Home Internationals

At Sheringham Golf Club, Norfolk today, the English team won the Senior women's home internationals for a sixth time in eight years with a 100 per cent record after the three-day competition.

Scotland beaten by England at the Seniors' Home Internationals

Scotland lost their grip on the senior women's home golf internationals title when they were well beaten, 6 1/2-1 1/2 by England at Sheringham Golf Club, Norfolk.
The Scots had drawn their first-day match with Wales.
Scotland's only winner was Ladybank's Lorna Bennett who staged a grandstand finish, winning four holes in a row from the 14th, for a 2 and 1 win over Susan Dye.
The half-point came in the morning foursomes, courtesy of Fiona De Vries (St Rule) and Ann Ryan (Tain) who halved their tie with Roz Adams and Jo Ashmore.
The other match today ended in a 4-4 draw between Ireland and Wales.

Yes it is official - Isla Anna Telfer arrived today, September 24th at 10am - to delighted parents David and Karen.
We are all absolutely thrilled - and somewhat in shock because after 10 male Telfers on the trot, we were beginning to think we'd never see a little girl.
Isla weighed in at 7lbs 11 oz and has the same colouring as Scott (and features too)
I make no apologies for being a besotted Granny and have attached a photo taken 5 hours after birth and also one of my 2 little super-heroes (Scott and Calum)

Scottish Vets Jamboree at Blairgowrie --- The West Vets do well

Blairgowrie Golf Club was a very busy place on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of this week as 120 Vets from all over Scotland arrived to play in their annual competitions. Weather was kind to us this year and the courses were in very good condition.

The Championship played on the Lansdowne Course features the divisional champions in a knockout competition and May Hughes, our West vets Champion, was runner up in the final losing 2 and 1 to Karen Ballantyne (East).

Karen won the Scroggie Cup.

May won her quarter final and semi final against Lynne Terry (North) and Fiona de Vries (Midland) respectively. Well done May--you represented us very well.

In the medal round on Rosemount on Monday the winner of the Rosebowl was Moira Begbie (Midlands) 84-12-72. West Vets Captain Helen Faulds won 4th Handicap 78-5-73 and was also awarded the Lyon Picture for the best scratch 78.

The Catherine Costorphine Slaver (for the best Bronze Nett Score) was presented to Moyra Gordon 97-21-76. Moyra was also runner up in the Past Presidents Quaich.

The Greensomes Competition was played over the Lansdowne Course and West had 9 couples playing. Vice captain Fiona Roger took the place of Anne Dunn who unfortunately had a foot injury.

Carol Fell and Helen Faulds won the Tony Moffat Memorial Trophy for the best Scratch Score of 77 (2 over the SSS OF 75)and the Beddows Quaich for 1st handicap 77-7-70.

Bev New is the 2010 British Seniors Champion

Bev New from Lansdown, Somerset, is the new Senior British ladies’ open amateur champion.
Making her debut in the tournament after reaching the eligibility age of 50, the former Ladies European Tour player who won the English title and Curtis Cup honours as an amateur, shot the low round of the championship today to come through to snatch victory from joint fifth overnight, four shots off the pace.
Bev had rounds of 78, 84 and 73 for 19 over par 235 – scores that reflect how bad the conditions were for much of the three days of the championship.
The over-20mph wind of the first day returned, increasing in intensity from noon.
New, who had been joint first-round leader on 78 with Maureen Richmond (Royal Liverpool,) packed four birdies into her brilliant, wind-cheating final round.
Unfortunately Maureen had a poor inward half to finish off her chance of winning the title

West Vets did well on the final day with Alex Glennie have a 77 in the final round to finish on 250 alongside Troons Jane Finnie

MAUREEN RICHMOND LEADS WITH ROUND TO GO AT WEST KILBRIDE

Kilmacolm exile Maureen Richmond (nee Walker) a Curtis Cup player, British and Scottish girls champion in her youth and now a GP at Wallasey, is one good round away from adding to a glittering golfing CV that has been virtually dormant since she became a GP several decades ago.
At the end of a long, long day – the start of play was delayed 2hr 15min until 45mph early-morning winds abated – Dr Richmond and her playing partners finished their second rounds almost in darkness at 7.45pm.
Maureen added an 80 to her opening round of 78 and her 36-hole tally of 158 gives her a one-stroke lead from England’s Caroline Marron (Bromborough), recent winner of the English seniors’ stroke-play title, and Ireland’s Helen Jones (Strabane), winner last week by six strokes of the Irish senior women’s open amateur championship.
The field was cut to 40 and ties for tomorrow’s final round. Players had to have two-round aggregates of 173 or better to survive.
Other Scots in the picture after 36 holes are Ladybank’s European seniors team hero Lorna Bennett with a 79 for 163 and Blairgowrie’s Heather Anderson with an 81 for 164.
“I just played solidly,” said Lorna. “Nothing spectacular. Just kept going.”
Heather was drifting out of the top 20 when she reached the turn in 43 but she came back in 38, good going in the conditions, to salvage an 81.

The winds were even stronger at West Kilbride this morning than they were yesterday. But they dropped sufficiently for play in the second round to start at 10.15am - a delay of 2hr 15min from the scheduled time.
That means the last players will not tee off until 3.45pm.
There will be a cut to the leading 40 players and ties at the end of the second round.
"We had a test of the conditions early this morning and the balls were being blown off the greens, but now the wind has dropped enough for us to start play for the day at 10.15am," said Tournament Director Susan Simpson after a second course/wind inspection after 9.30am.

The winds are even stronger at West Kilbride this morning (Wednesday) than they were yesterday!
The start of the second round in the Senior British women's open amateur championship has been delayed from 8am as scheduled to 10am.
"We will have another look at the situation then," said Tournament Director Susan Simpson.
"We had a test of the conditions early this morning and the balls were being blown off the greens."
If the decision is made to call of play today, the championship will be reduced to 36 holes with everybody playing in the second and last round on Thursday.

May Hughes and Jane Finnie are the best West Vets in the Storm Lashed British Seniors Open at West Kilbride

Eight Scots in the leading 20 of the Senior British women’s open amateur stroke-play golf championship at the end of a storm-lashed day at West Kilbride was a good effort on the part of the home brigade.
Winds of up to 50mph … lashing rain … a hailstorm … it was all there in North Ayrshire. But the over-50 female golfers are made of stern stuff.
Portaloos out on the course were blown over (fortunately no one in them at the time).
A scoreboard came crashing down when the support legs simply sheered off due to the force of the wind.
Umbrellas were either blown to bits or last seen heading for Northern Ireland.
The clubhouse was awash with horror stories from happenings out on the course. The Canadian who finished second in the Irish seniors open last week required 97 shots to get round, including an 11 at the third and an 8 at the 10th.
Yet there was never any suggestion that the Ladies Golf Union would show some mercy and call the players in. The course was never flooded and remained open. The balls were never oscillating despite the gale. Let the show go on.
And from a field of 90 players there nil No Returns and only one retirement.

At the end of day that was more like January than mid-September, Kilmacolm exile Maureen Richmond (Royal Liverpool), and another former Curtis Cup player, Bev New from Somerset were the only two players to break 80.
They go into the second of three rounds sharing the pole position on six-over-par 78, one over the CSS (Reduction only).
The other Scots who did well were Tain’s Anne Ryan, joint 10th with an 82, Heather Anderson (Blairgowrie), and West Vets Jane Finnie (Troon Ladies) and May Hughes (Lanark), joint 12th on 83, and Lorna Bennett (Ladybank), Mary Smith (Tain), Fiona Anderson (Formby Ladies) and Fiona De Vries (St Rule), sharing 19th position.

Their terrific round of 71 --- 2 under the women's SS and 1 under the Men's SS won them the coveted title.

West Vet Jennifer Mack (the Haggs Castle Ladies Captain) and her son, Gavin Mack (pictured above) had four birdies and an eagle three in their round of 73 and pipped the 2008 Champions, Karen Marshall and Stephen Marshall to the runners up spot on the better inward half.

British Seniors Strokeplay begins on Tuesday at West Kilbride

The Senior Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship at West Kilbride Golf Club is due to start on Tuesday 14th September. It takes the same format as the recent Irish Senior Ladies strokeplay - one round of 18 holes on each of two consecutive days - Tuesday and Wednesday 14th and 15th September and the top 40 go forward to the third round on Thursday 16th September. There are 90 entrants from thirteen different countries although the bulk are undoubtedly from the home nations -

Senior Home Internationals -- Team Selected

West Vets May Hughes and Alex Glennie have been selected as reserves for the Senior Home Internationals at the end of this month.
East Vets Webmaster Noreen Fenton joins the gold medal winning team from the European Senior Ladies' Team Championship in the team to represent Scotland in the Senior Home International Matches to be held at Sheringham Golf Club, 28-30 September. The team is:

SVLGA WEST DIVISION AUTUMN MEETING : Local Member Anna wins the May Craddock Trophy

45 ladies took part in the West Vets Autumn Meeting held over Milngavie golf course today for the May Craddock Trophy. The course was in very good condition, but playing long and the scores reflected this. Local knowledge of member Anna Telfer came to the fore and she recorded a gross 78 less 5 for a net 73, Janette McCartney (Erskine) also recorded a net 73 off a handicap of 8 but was beaten into first position by Anna's better inward half.
Well done Anna.
Vet's Captain Helen Faulds won the scratch with a 79.
There were many tales to tell over lunch and fortunately the weather stayed dry until almost the end of play - just a few games having to suffer a heavy shower.

West Vets Medal at Milngavie GC

First of all a huge congratulations to the Scottish Seniors team who won the European Seniors Team Championships last week in Berlin. It was a fantastic result with the whole team contributing points in the matchplay stage. Well done!

Hoping to see a good turnout of West Vets tomorrow (Thursday 9th September) at Milngavie Golf Club for our last fixture of the season. It's a running ballot from 9.30-11.30am. Fingers crossed for good weather.

Scotland are the European Senior Team Champions

Scotland have pulled off a famous victory in the final of the European Senior Women's amateur team championship at Sporting Club, Berlin.
They beat the favourites and top seeds England 3-2 to win the gold medals for the first time.
Qualifying sixth of eight for the match-play stages, Pamela Williamson's squad had scored good wins on their way to the final but England were the overwhelming favourites.
When England took a 2-0 lead in the final, the writing looked to be on the wall for the Scots but they came back with a tremendous rally to tie it up at 2-2.
Then Tain's Anne Ryan, a debutante at his level of the game, won the title-gaining victory over Susan Dye in the last match to finish.
Anne, whose sister Mary Smith is also in the team, was two holes up at the turn against Susan Dye and not only maintained that advantage over the inward half, she added to it to win by 3 and 2.
Earlier Caroline Masson, four up at the turn, had beaten Fiona de Vries by 5 and 4.
And England had gone 2-0 up when Rozalyn Adams, also four up at the turn, had gone on to win by 5 and 4 against Heather Anderson from Alyth.
Then the Scotland glory run for gold started.
Mary Smith (Tain) and Moira Thomson (Gullane Ladies) won the foursomes tie by 2 and 1 against Janet Melville and Felicity Christine after being all square at the turn.
Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) levelled it overall at 2-2 by beating Christine Quinn by one hole after leading by that margin at the turn.
Switzerland beat Ireland 3 1/2-1 1 1/2 in the play-off for third place and the bronze medals.

Scotland Seniors beat Ireland to reach the final of the European Seniors Team Championships

Scotland are through to the final of the European senior women's amateur team golf championship at Sporting Club Berlin.
The team of over-50s, captained by Pamela Williamson (Baberton), beat Ireland 3-2 in the semi-finals today (Friday) to assure themselves of gaining at least the silver medals.
But the Scots are playing so well they will be fancying their chance of striking gold against the No 1 seeds and favourites England who beat Switzerland 3 1/2-1 1/2 in the other semi-final.

Scotland, who qualified sixth of eight, achieved a marvellous win over defending champions Germany, the No 3 seeds and playing on home turf, in the quarter-finals of the European senior women's amateur golf championship at Sporting Club Berlin today.

SCOTS SENIOR WOMEN QUALIFY IN SIXTH PLACE

Scotland qualified in sixth place for the European senior women's amateur team golf championship at Berlin Sporting Club today.
They will play No 3 seeds Germany, the defending champions, in the quarter-finals of the match-play stages.
England (760) earned top seed status ahead of France (776) and Germany (778).
The Scots required 10 more shots than they did in the first qualifying round. None of them broke 80. Closest to it was Mary Smith (Tain) who had the non-scoring round on Tuesday. This time she led the Scots with an 80.
Fiona De Vries had an 81, Anne Ryan and Moira Thomson both 82 and Lorna Bennett an 84. Heather Anderson had the non-counting 86.
