Merry Christmas

Just when we all thought that life could maybe get back to some normality the virus has again wreaked havoc with Christmas and New Year celebrations. We will continue to keep our fingers crossed that the 2022 golf season will provide a light at the end of this tunnel and we will look forward to seeing everyone very soon.
On behalf of the west vets committee can i wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and health and happiness for 2022.

Club V1

The SVLGA have now made the decision to change their operating system to ClubV1.

This has imporatant implications for the way we will enter competitions for the 2022 season. I would therefore encourage you (if you haven't already) to download the ClubV1 app. We are currently working with ClubV1 to ensure this transition is as smooth as it can be ? Ongoing updates will be provided in due course.

Winning the Jamboree at West Kilbride

Heather and Ann Prentice

It is with much sadness that I have to announce the death of Honorary Member Heather Anderson (Caldwell GC and Troon Ladies)  on the 8th November 2021 a month short of her 91st birthday.

She was West Vets Champion - 18 years ago !

HEATHER STILL BLOOMING AT 73 - Article from by Colin Farquharson
Heather Anderson notched up yet another title in her extraordinarly long and successful golfing career when she won the Scottish Veteran Ladies Golf Association's West Division title at Renfrew yesterday (Wed) at the age of 73.
Mrs Anderson won the Scottish women's amateur championship in 1969 when she beat Kathleen Lackie in the final at West Kilbride. She played for Great Britain & Ireland in the Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe that year, having appeared for Scotland in the women's home internationals of 1964, 1965, 1968, 1969, 1970 and 1971.
At Renfrew, Heather beat Ann Prentice (Bothwell Castle) by 3 and 2 in the final after winning the second and third to go two up and never falling behind after that.
She was three up at the turn.

WEST DIVISION VETERAN WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP --
Renfrew
Quarter-finals _ P Hutton (Lanark) beat P Richmond (Douglas Park) 3 and 2; A Prentice (Bothwell Castle) beat F Roger (Ranfurly Castle) 2 holes; J Mack (Haggs Castle) beat H Faulds (Douglas Park) 2 holes; H Anderson (Troon Ladies) beat A Telfer (Milngavie) 2 holes.
Semi-finals_ Prentice beat Hutton 6 and 5, Anderson beat Mack 4 and 3.

Final _ Anderson beat Prentice 3 and 2.

And finally Captain May Hughes said --
I had the privilege of playing with Heather in a Vets meeting at West Kilbride. She recalled the days of her victory in the Scottish in 1969. And she also asked the caterer if he had any of those donoughts she so enjoyed at that time. Sadly he didn’t have any !

Heather’s funeral  will be on Friday 26th November. -- See Details

West Vets Lynn McColl has died suddenly on holiday

Lynn McColl

It with great sadness that I have to inform you all that Lynn McColl (The Carrick)  has died. She suffered a bleed on the brain whilst away on holiday.

For all of you who knew Lynn, she was such an friendly, energetic & positive person. She loved her golf and of course her other passion pickleball.

She was on the WestVets Committee and represented the association in many team matches.

Lynn will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Our thoughts are with her family at this very sad time.

East Vets win the 2021 ASP friendship Trophy

Vice Captain May Hughes presents the Asp Trophy to the East Vets

Turnhouse Golf
Course was the venue today for the annual match for the ASP Friendship Trophy

The West have held the trophy for the last 3 years and were keen today to continue with a winning formula to bring the trophy back along the M8.

Alas our eastern counterparts were more than up to the task and the ASP trophy will reside with the East for the next 12 months with a score of 4 points to 1.

Our ladies however all enjoyed the golf course, which was in excellent condition and the sunny but windy conditions.

Our thanks to the east for their hospitality and we look forward to a return match in 2022.

East Vets win the Elise Duncan Trophy at Douglas Park

Susan Penman and May Hughes

As we welcomed Susan Penman and her team to Douglas Park, it was hoped we could finally get a win over the East on home soil, unfortunately it was not to be. The West Team lost narrowly 5 games to 4.

Although the main thing about this match was that we managed to get it played after all the uncertainty over restrictions, especially travel from different levels.

It was a perfect day for golf, with Douglas Park in excellent condition.

LESLEY LLOYD WINS HER 4th WEST VETS CHAMPIONSHIP

Joanne Sharp and Champion Lesley Lloyd

I think we were quite lucky with the weather for today’s golf considering the forecast, although it was wet and blustery at times.

In the first semifinal in the Championship between Joanne Sharp and Donna Jackson went to the 20th – a great match, with Joanne eventually winning.

The other semifinal was between Lesley Lloyd and Liz Stewart, with Lesley winning 3 & 2

The Championship Final between Lesley and Joanne saw both players matching each other for the first few holes, then Lesley went two up, Joanne pulled this back to be all square at the turn. Lesley then got the two holes back and went onto win 4 & 3.

In the Stewart Trophy, the first semifinal was between Ann Shanks and Josephine Monaghan, both from Dumbarton GC and they play together!

Josephine came out the winner, 2 & 1

In the other semifinal Anita McMillan won 3 & 2 against Lyn Black.

The final in the afternoon between
Josephine and Anita, Josephine who is one of our newer members, won 7 & 6.

Obviously with restrictions in place, there were only a few spectators, from the morning matches watching the games.

A special thanks to Renfrew GC for making us very welcome for the two days, all members we spoke to were genuinely interested in the competition. The course was in excellent condition.

A special thanks to Alex Hammell, the Club Secretarywho was on hand to make sure everything was in place.

Also a big thanks to Liz, the new catering manager for looking after us for the two days.

“Thank you to all spectators, those who came along in the afternoon & to the players who lost in the morning and stayed onto give their support."
