Message from SVLGA President Gillian Kirkwood relating to last Monday's competition.
As some of you will know, the Patrick Rosebowl over Rosemount on Monday 21st September was played in very adverse conditions, with torrential rain in the middle of the day causing the course to be closed and play to be suspended.
This decision was made by the greenkeeper, as the sixth hole was completely surrounded by casual water. Unfortunately the players out on the course did not know this, and those on the course after the sixth carried on playing. We were very close to abandoning the competition altogether, and had given ourselves a deadline of 2:15 to get play started again, as players at the end of the field would not have finished in daylight if they had started any later.
At 2:15 the rain had relented, the sixth had drained and play from the first tee resumed. The delay was approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Those of us on the committee assumed that the competition would be a "Reduction Only" but when it came to calculate the CSS, there were sufficient players within their buffer zone to make the CSS 77.
According to the CONGU Rules, we could not declare the competition non-counting once it had started. Nor could we manipulate the scores to alter the CSS to be Reduction Only.
I have to apologise to the players out on the course during the deluge, who did not know that play had been suspended and carried on as best they could. Yes… we should have let you know, but klaxons, buggies and volunteers were not to hand.
The tree-lined fairways are lovely but they do hamper communication. If we could declare the competition Reduction Only we would do so in an instant.
Yours sincerely Gillian Kirkwood'

Meg Sievwright, from Buckpool, made one of the most amazing come-backs in the history of the competition. Six down after 7 holes, and still six down after 10 against past British Seniors Champion, Janet Melville, she dug deep and clawed her way back to be all square playing the last. Unfortunately a lost ball in the right rough spoilt the "Come-Back Kid" story, and she lost by one hole, but all credit to her determination not to be beaten out in the country.

Sheena Wood lost to Sue Dye 1 hole
Lorna McKinlay halved with Caroline Berry
Lesley Lloyd beat Barbara Laird 2 and 1
Gillian Kyle halved with Julie Wheeldon
Alex Glennie halved with Chris Stokes
Meg Sievwright lost to Janet Melville 1 hole

EAST WIN THE ELISE DUNCAN TROPHY
East Vets Team - Winners of the Elise Duncan Trophy |
West Vets Team |
Report from Anne Brownie (East Vets) ) Captain.
The annual scratch match between the East and West Divisions of the SVLGA (Scottish Veteran Ladies’ Golf Association) took place today at Mortonhall Golf Club, Edinburgh.
The result was a 6 to 3 win for the East whose team members are seen pictured with the Elise Duncan Trophy
On a “blustery” (i.e. strong to gale-force winds) day, the sun at least shone at Mortonhall and some sparkling golf was on show despite the unseasonable weather.
Players on both sides complimented the condition of the course; iron shots were played in close and putts (long and short) were holed on both sides.
There were four halved matches, one win for the West and four wins for the East. In fact, after the first six matches, it was evenly poised at three points apiece but the East won the last three games to close out the 6-3 win.
Report from Marion Stewart (West Vets Captain)
Captain Marion arrived late having taken the wrong turn off after exiting the motorway.Report from Marion Stewart (West Vets Captain)
Her team however, arrived on time and enjoyed scones and coffee/tea before playing.the weather was sunny but very windy and the West players found the conditions very tricky and were glad the green keeper had not rolled the greens as he had intended.
Lesley Lloyd was our only winner but 5 other matches went to the 18th.
Gillian Kyle earning a great draw against Noreen Fenton after being 3 down at the 15th.
Congratulations to Captain Anne Brownie and her East team who won 6 /3 and we look forward to challenging them again at West Kilbride next year.

Thursday was a very wet day and all players got a soaking. Some good golf was played nevertheless and some matches had to go to extra holes. The semi-finals and finals took place on Friday (today) and apart from a strong wind and one or two showers, the sun shone most of the time. Lesley Lloyd (Hayston) --- Lanarkshire County Champion emerged the winner of the West Vets Championship in her first year with us and many congratulations go to Lesley. She deserves a rest this weekend after some of her matches had to go to extra holes - The semi final against Renfrewshire County Champion Gillian Kyle going to the 21st Hole !
Margaret Gray (Old Ranfurly) was a worthy winner of the Stewart Trophy in its first year and congratulations go to her as well. Golf is a serious game but there is always the amusing moments. Lynn McColl was bemoaning the fact that she lost three Titleist Pro V1 balls on the course during her semi-final against Margaret but Morag Key lost one ball in a ballwasher! Now, can anyone beat that? We also encountered a little grey squirrel at the 4th hole who managed to get into Marion Stewart's golf bag in the morning round and Margaret Gray's golf bag in the afternoon round. Sorry to say that neither keep any goodies for little squirrels in their bags!

S.V.L.G.A. ( West ) Championship at Largs Kelburne
On a blustery but sunny day 72 ladies played at Largs Kelburne in the S.V.L.G.A. (West ) Championship.
The course was in beautiful condition, the green keepers being very kind by putting the flags in accessible places particularly at the 1st where Helen Burnett even had a 2.
Thanks go to Secretary Morag Keys for organising this event so successfully despite all the earlier hiccups and also to Largs Kelburne and Captain Doreen Reid for accomodating us so warmly.
Thanks also go to all helpers and players (everyone arrived in time thanks to Morag's warnings) who helped this event go so smoothly.
Players found conditions very tricky and as a result the competition was reduction only.
Well done to two of our elderly players who battled round the course despite their trolleys breaking down half way round.

PROBLEMS FOR SUMMER MEETING AT LARGS
Dear Member,
As you know, the Summer Meeting at Largs Kelburn was confirmed in writing on 7th March last year by their Secretary and myself. .On visiting the Club today to finalise arrangements, I was informed that their Secretary had resigned in February of this year and had failed to enter our fixture in their diary nor had he informed the Professional.
Needless to say I was speechless and extremely upset, even more so in that they have two Outings already arranged for the 14th May at the times we had reserved the tee.
Obviously these visitors are paying and we are not!
After lengthy negotiations, I have to inform you that rather than lose our Summer Meeting I have had to accept an earlier tee-off time of 8.30am. I know that this earlier tee-off time will affect some of the members who are travelling a distance and bearing in mind that the Draw is done in strict handicap order as it is the Championship Qualifier. We will be restricted to approximately 81 players, giving us 27 tee times with 8 minute intervals. I have to request all of you to be understanding of the limitations, restrictions and requests that we have to enforce. I will set these out numerically as it is easier to follow.
1. The lowest handicappers are out first and I would ask all players with a handicap of 9 and under who most definitely could not make the time allotted, i.e. from 8.30am
until say 9.15am, to telephone me as soon as possible in order that I may try to do the Draw to facilitate everyone. I know this may not be completely satisfactory to
everyone but again I am asking you to be understanding of our difficulty.
2. I would request all players to be on the tee at least 10 minutes before their starting time. Because the first hole is a Par 3 (and can be a little stinker!), we wish to get play moving as quickly as possible. So, if the green clears quickly then the next 3 can tee off early. Also, if any player is in difficulty perhaps it would be sensible to wave the next 3 players through before hunting for balls.
3. I have arranged for catering to be available from 8am in case any of you wish to have your breakfast there before teeing off! Also, catering will be available all day from 8am from the usual Bar Menu but they also have a really nice restaurant upstairs if anyone wishes something a little fancier!
Since arriving home later this afternoon, I have received an email from the Acting Secretary of Largs Golf Club with the sincere apologies from the Captain and the membership for the inconvenience caused to us. I would also inform you that they did manage to cancel one of the parties who had a tee-off time at 11am., but unfortunately the ladies from East Renfrewshire Golf Club are a large party and naturally the Club could not rearrange their date. They may have to put back their tee-off time but I would hope that all the West Vets would do their utmost to get play underway as quickly as possible.
I realise that this might be a bit of a shock to all of you but I can assure you that it was an even bigger one for me!!
I do hope that the Committee will have your full support and co-operation to ensure an enjoyable day for everyone.
Should you have any queries regarding the above or would like clarification on anything, please do not hesitate to contact me. (I might regret saying this!)
I realise that this Email will not affect all of you but since the closing date for entry is still 12 days away, we felt it better to send this to everyone. The Draw will be done as soon as possible after the 22nd April so please look on the Website thereafter.
Kind Regards, Morag
