East Vets win the Elise Duncan Trophy at Douglas Park

Susan Penman and May Hughes

As we welcomed Susan Penman and her team to Douglas Park, it was hoped we could finally get a win over the East on home soil, unfortunately it was not to be. The West Team lost narrowly 5 games to 4.

Although the main thing about this match was that we managed to get it played after all the uncertainty over restrictions, especially travel from different levels.

It was a perfect day for golf, with Douglas Park in excellent condition.

East retain the Elise Duncan Trophy.

Captain Chris Fowler presents East Captain Anne Rorrison
with the Elise Duncan Trophy

The West Vets Team turned up at Glencorse Golf Club hoping for a win for the first time since 2014.
It was much closer than last year, unfortunately we lost 5 ½ -  3 ½
However 5 games were very well contested, going all the way to the 18th.

Both teams thoroughly enjoyed Glencorse, finding it a tricky and interesting course. It was in great condition considering the weather the day before.
As usual the friendship was evident on the course and in the clubhouse during the meal, and we must thank Glencorse G.C. and East Vets Captain Anne Rorrison for hosting such an enjoyable day.

EAST VETS HAVE A CONVINCING WIN AT KILMACOLM

East and West Vets Teams

A strong West Vets team turned up at Kilmacolm determined to win the Elise Duncan Trophy for the first time in several years – but the East Vets team had other ideas, achieving an excellent 7-2 victory. However 4 of the 9 games went to the 18th, and Donna Jackson had an impressive 5 & 4 win.

We are indebted to Kilmacolm Golf Club for the use of their excellent course, which was enjoyed by all (despite some tricky pin positions !), and the ‘before and afters’ catering was first class.

Lady Captain Sara Bishop very kindly acted as Starter, and Club Captain Jane McDonald very  thoughtfully donated a Club crystal glass which was presented to East Vet Anne Brownie (pictured left)  who got a hole-in-one at the par 3  12th hole !

Results : West Team named first

Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) lost to Jennifer Bryans (Harburn) 3 & 1
Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle) beat Caroline Steedman (Murrayfield) 5 & 4

WEST VETS NARROWLY LOSE OUT TO EAST VETS IN THE ELISE DUNCAN TROPHY AT MORTONHALL GOLF CLUB

West Vets Team - Photo Courtesy of East Vets Captain Caroline Kinnaird
East Vets Team - Photo Courtesy of East Vets Captain Caroline Kinnaird

Mortonhall Golf Club was the perfect setting for the Annual East v West Vets Match for the Elise Duncan Trophy. The fine, testing course along with the good weather was enjoyed by all, but the East Vets retained the Trophy, narrowly beating the West 5-4.

The match couldn’t have had a better start, with Donna Jackson achieving an eagle 2 at the first hole ! However despite losing overall, there was lots of good golf played, and all players should feel justifiably proud of their commitment and effort.
As usual the camaraderie was evident on the course and in the clubhouse during the meal, and we must thank Mortonhall G.C. and East Vets Captain Caroline Kinnaird for hosting such an enjoyable day.

The results were as follows:- (West Team players first named)

Donna Jackson lost to Jennifer Bryans 2 & 1
Gillian Kyle halved with Anne Hanson
Lesley Lloyd beat Sue Penman 5 & 4
Nicky Henderson halved with Carol Brown
Roz Purdom beat Dawn Young 4 & 3
May Hughes lost to Anne Brownie by 1 hole
Robina Gilbertson beat Sophia Spiewak 9 & 7
Jennifer Mack lost to Linda Grieve by 1 hole
Anabel Kane lost to Hazel Saunders 4 & 3

Finally all in the team ( and I’m sure other West Vets ) are thinking of Liz Stewart,  and we hope to hear better news soon about her Mum.

EAST TEAM RETAIN THE ELISE DUNCAN TROPHY

West Team

East  Team
The Scratch S.V.L.G.A. West team played the East at West Kilbride for the Elise Duncan Trophy. The weather was fantastic and the course was in excellent condition, but the West team succumbed to the wonderful putting of the East team who were coached by Anne Brownie the East Captain who had been down at West Kilbride the week before.
Anne Brownie playing against Patricia Davidson was not even put off by a large branch falling off a tree at the first tee - she had to stop mid swing and managed to regroup and send her drive down the middle of the fairway.
The matches were all very close and the result of the match was not determined until the last game on the course finished May Hughes against Jane Herd which resulted in a draw so the East won 5 / 4.
Results
West names first.
Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) lost 3/2 to Anne Hanson ( Glencorse )
Carol Whyte (Milngavie ) lost 2/1 to Jennifer Bryans ( Harburn )

EAST WIN THE ELISE DUNCAN TROPHY

East Vets Team - Winners of the Elise Duncan Trophy
West Vets Team

Report from Anne Brownie (East Vets) ) Captain.

The annual scratch match between the East and West Divisions of the SVLGA (Scottish Veteran Ladies’  Golf  Association) took place today at Mortonhall Golf Club, Edinburgh.
The result was a 6 to 3 win for the East whose team members  are seen pictured with the Elise Duncan Trophy
On a “blustery” (i.e. strong to gale-force winds) day, the sun at least shone at Mortonhall and some sparkling golf was on show despite the unseasonable weather.
Players on both sides complimented the condition of the course; iron shots were played in close and putts (long and short) were holed on both sides.
There were four halved matches, one win for the West and four wins for the East.   In fact, after the first six matches, it was evenly poised at three points apiece  but the East won the last three games to close out the 6-3 win.

Report from Marion Stewart (West Vets Captain)

Captain Marion arrived late having taken the wrong turn off after exiting the motorway.
Her team however, arrived on time and enjoyed scones and coffee/tea before playing.the weather was sunny but very windy and the West players found the conditions very tricky and were glad the green keeper had not rolled the greens as he had intended.
Lesley Lloyd was our only winner but 5 other matches went to the 18th.
Gillian Kyle earning a great draw against Noreen Fenton after being 3 down at the 15th.
Congratulations to Captain Anne Brownie and her East team who won 6 /3 and we look forward to challenging them again at West Kilbride next year.

RESULTS
(East players first)

This as a Scratch match which is always very closely contested and today was no exception. The sun shone and the course was in great condition. Our hosts supplied a delicious meal after the match which allowed us to catch up with "old" friends and have a good chat. The Captain and her team then returned home tired, but very happy!

Jane Finnie (Troon Ladies)  beat  Pam Williamson
May Hughes (Lanark) beat Lesley Johnstone

WEST VETS PAST CAPTAIN ELISE DUNCAN

It is with sadness that I report the death on 19th January, 2013 of one of our Past Captains, Mrs. Elise Duncan.
Elise had been a long time member of the West Vets and was Captain in 1995 and 1996.

In 1991, Elise gifted a beautiful silver salver, namely The Elise Duncan Trophy, which to this day is contested between the East Division and West Division's low handicap players. This trophy replaced the Lady McInnes Shaw Shield. Perhaps, fittingly, the West Division won the Elise Duncan Trophy in its inception year.

Her funeral took place today - Tuesday, 29th January at Linn Crematorium.

Elise will be fondly remembered by many past and present members of the West Vets.

WEST VETS WIN THE ELISE DUNCAN TROPHY

The West  Vets and East Vets Team -- Courtesy of Noreen Fenton (East Vets Captain)
What a magnificient day we had at Troon Portland for our match against the East Vets yesterday.  On Tuesday evening the match was in doubt as seriously heavy rain was forecast for most of the country.  Noreen, the East Captain rang me to say that she was concerned that her team would find travelling conditions awful and wondered if they would not be happy to make their way West to Troon.  I tried to assure her that the weather at Troon would be good enough to play our match, but she did sound hesitant.  I left the decision in her capable hands and no further communication came my way!  I left Glasgow in heavy rain yesterday morning hoping that my reading of the forecast was correct and in would indeed not be wet at Troon.  Why did I ever doubt myself!  We had the most wonderful day of sunshine, blue skies and a very pleasant breeze. As the two teams arrived the laughter and happy faces in the car park were a joy to see!  No one could believe it.
We started the day with coffee and bacon rolls followed by what is always a very competitive match played in the usual friendly and happy atmosphere and for the first time since 2006 the West team managed to wrestle back the Elise Duncan Trophy by the very narrowest of margins - 5 matches to 4. Drinks after the match followed by a lovely late lunch with a lot of chat and laughter.  A wonderful end to a wonderful day!
Many thanks to Troon Portland for looking after us so well and thank you to the East team for a very happy day. We look forward in anticipation to our match, next year, in the East where we will be determined to hold on to the Trophy!

Results:
Alex Glennie  beat  Noreen Fenton  5&3
May Hughes  lost to Anne Hanson  1hole
Helen Faulds  lost to  Fiona Hunter  4&3
Suzanne Cadden  beat  Pamela Williamson  1hole
Jane Finnie  beat  Karen Ballantyne  3&2
Janice Paterson  beat  Sue Penman  2&1
Pat Hutton  lost to  Lesley Johnstone  2&1
Jennifer Mack  beat  Linda Grieve  6&5
Anne Robinson  lost to  Ruth Brown  5&3

WEST V EAST TEAM AT TROON PORTLAND AND SCOTTISH SENIORS 2012

WEST V EAST  AT TROON PORTLAND
The West are very much looking forward to our annual match against the East for the Elise Duncan Trophy, to be played this year at Troon Portland on Wednesday, July 11th.  Each team consists of 9 players, and all 9 matches will be played off scratch.  Last year, played at Gullane, we were very close to bringing the Trophy to the West but unfortunately we were pipped at the post. This year we hope overcome the power of the East on home territory!  One thing we can be certain of, is that we will have a competitive, friendly match. What we can't be certain of is the weather conditions we will encounter! Hopefully with the arrival of the month of July we shall at last see some blue skies and a bit of warmth to contend with.

Team:
Suzanne Cadden  (Cardross)
Helen Faulds  (Douglas Park)
Jane Finnie  (Ladies Club Troon)
Alison Gemmill  (Kilmarnock Barassie)
Alex Glennie  (Kilmarnock Barassie)
May Hughes  (Lanark)
Pat Hutton  (Lanark)
Jennifer Mack  (Haggs Castle)
Janice Paterson  (Drumpellier)

SCOTTISH SENIORS 2012
The Scottish Seniors (Close) Amateur Championship is this year being played at Kemnay Golf Club situated west of Aberdeen, from July 3rd - 6th July.

Seven of the above team along with seven others, including your Captain and Vice-Captain, will all be taking part.  Monday 2nd July will be a practice day followed by two days of stroke play, the Scottish Senior Stroke Play Champion being the competitor with the lowest aggregate gross for the two rounds   From that stroke play championship, 16 players returning the lowest gross scores over the 36 holes will then qualify for the Match Play Championship to be played the following two days.

To all those taking part, play good and golf and have a fun week.  Hopefully some of the honours will be brought back to the West!

East Vets retain Elise Duncan Trophy

Photos Courtesy of Noreen Fenton - Click to enlarge

What a magnificent day the West Vets had for our annual match against the East Vets at Gullane yesterday. The sun shone from beginning to end and the views from the course were spectacular. Thank you to Noreen Fenton (East Captain) and her committee for organising such a lovely day for us. We met around 2pm for coffee and shortbread and 9 singles matches teed off from 3pm .

The starter at Gullane was concerned when his sheet for the day said: 3pm Vets Match - 9 matches. I think he thought we were 'Vetinary Surgeons' or perhaps he had also thought we might be 'veterans'! Having watched the first 3 games tee off he quickly realised the standard of golf was high and he would not have to be concerned about the people following on the tee after us!

The matches were exciting and close, four of them going all the way to the 18th green! I had the nice job of following the games around, enjoying the sunshine and not having to do all the hard work! The match couldn't have been closer ending in a 4.5 draw and so the East, having won last year's encounter, retain the trophy until our next meeting, next year, in the West.

After the match, we had a very enjoyable meal together in the visitors clubhouse and it was fully 8.45pm before we all set off on journeys home. Our thanks go to both the staff in the main clubhouse and the staff in the visitors clubhouse for looking after us so well.

We look forward to next meeting in the West in 2012. Again many thanks to Noreen and also many thanks to my team who played their hearts out - we almost came back West with the trophy!

RESULTS:

Alex Glennie halved with Noreen Fenton
May Hughes lost to Pamela Williamson
Helen Faulds beat Karen Ballantyne
Suzanne Cadden lost to Sue Penman
Jane Finnie beat Ruth Brown
Pat Hutton beat Anne Brownie
Jennifer Mack lost to Caroline Johnston
Anna Telfer lost to Jane Herd
Janice Paterson beat Eleanor Blair

Well done to all the West Vets at Portpatrick and the West Vets Team is named for the match against the East

The Scottish Seniors Championship at Portpatrick is now a distant memory! I hope you have all read with interest the reports written by Carol Fell and looked at all the wonderful photographs taken by Carol, Claire Hargan (SLGA) and Jean MacIntyre. Not only did the photographs cover all the 5 days of golf competition and participants, but also wildlife, flowers and Portpatrick by day and by evening! We were so lucky with the weather. We had windy conditions, warm weather, cool weather but can you believe no rain! How lucky we were! Serious golf was played but we had a lot of fun and laughter 'apres golf'!

I would like, firstly, to congratulate Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) on winning the Scottish Stroke Play Championship with a two round total of 150 (76, 74) A wonderful achievement. Well done Alex!

Four West Vets, Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie), Pat Hutton (Lanark), Janice Paterson (Drumpellier) and May Hughes (Lanark) all qualified for the match play stages, with Jennifer Mack (Haggs Castle) unfortunately missing out in a play off for the last match play place.

A new Net Match Play competion was introduced this year and our Webmaster Carol qualified for the match play stages

I would like to say how nice it was to see so many of the West Vets performing so well and to congratulate them all on their achievements.

On behalf of the West Vets I would like to congratulate Alex Glennie and May Hughes on being selected for the Scottish Vets Team to play in the Vets Jamboree at Wellingborough GC, in August and also Janice Paterson who has been named as 2nd reserve.
