Many Congratulations go to West Vet May Hughes of Lanarkshire who played superbly well at the County Jamboree at Kilmacolm this week. Her putting and chipping was fantastic --- Well done May
-- And what about our West Vets Captain Helen Faulds representing D&A -- a good win against Renfrewshire in the Singles and a halved match against Lanarkhire. Also West Vets Suzanne Cadden (D&A) who had a good win in the foursomes against Ayrshire
Meantime --- Ayrshire's Captain Alex Glennie was keeping all her players in check and probably would have been playing had it not been for all her Captaincy duties.

Never mind the Curtis Cup! -the match of the year takes place next Wednesday, the 23rd June at Troon Portland between the West and East Vets. We will meet at 10.15am with an 11am tee off time.

The Mid West Trophy was played today against Midlands Vets. The match was played over Douglas Park Golf course in lovely weather and enjoyed by all. West Vets who have not won this trophy for at least 4 years at last managed regain the trophy by winning 5 - 2 . Senior Scratch Competition for the Riccarton Salver

The Riccarton Rosebowl is on Sunday 8th August over Hamilton Golf Course. This is an SLGA ranking competition of 2 rounds.
On that day there is also the Senior Ladies competition for the Riccarton Salver. This competition is a Scratch Competition over one round and played between the rounds of the Rosebowl. It ran in 2009 for the first time but many ladies did not know about it until too late. The idea of the competition was to encourage Ladies who previously played in the Rosebowl but who now do not wish to play 36 hole competition. We hope that this could renew many old friendships.

Alex Glennie and May Hughes -- The 2010 West Vets Finalists

The Matchplay stages of the West Vets Championships were played today over Renfrew Golf Club in yet again "Wet conditions".
Top seed May Hughes continued her good run of form with wins against Suzanne Cadden and the 2009 Champion Helen Faulds to reach the final against Alex Glennie. This is the repeat final from 2008 in which May was the winner on that occasion

Maureen Rennie from Douglas Park the 2009 holder of the Bronze Trophy has managed to reach the final again and now meets Jane Thomson from Whitecraigs

Summer Meeting at Old Ranfurly May Hughes and Moira Hogg are the Stars of the Day

May Hughes (Lanark) pictured left played great golf today to have the leading Score of the Day with a 2 over Par 74 at Old Ranfurly on a rather windy, blustery and showery day.
After starting with a bogey 6 she then managed to have 3 birdies on the outward 9 and finished with a birdie 2 at the tricky 18th hole.
Moira Hogg playing over her Home Course had the best Net Score of the day. Despite having a 9 at the par 5 4th and 2 double bogeys on the inward half she finished well with 3 pars to have the best net score of 69 --- 3 under par to win both the Silver and Super Vet Awards.
In the Bronze Section Home player Anna McDougall was the winner with a net 70.

Scottish Seniors Closing Date for Entries

Claire Hargan is the new SLGA Tournament Organiser and she is hoping that you will come and enjoy some Seniors Golf play up in the North of Scotland at the end of June.
The last date for entries for the Scottish Seniors is a week today (Monday 31 May at 12 noon).
The Championship is being held at Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Club from 29 June to 2 July 2010.

Scottish Vets v Irish Vets

Eyjafjallajokull. Not a swear word but the name of the volcano responsible for the cancellation (among a few other things) of the Scottish v Irish Vets match at Portmarnock Links at the beginning of this week.
We are celebrating 10 years of this competition so fortunately a new date has been found in a busy calendar. ------ 20th - 22nd July.

Volcanic Disturbance Causes Disappointment to Defence of Mary McKenna Perpetual Trophy

The Scottish Vets match against the Irish has been cancelled due to the flight disruption after the Volcanic disruption in Iceland. Helen Faulds and Alex Glennie were part of the team plus Jennifer Mack was travelling as well to play in an arranged match.
The captain, Pamela Williamson of Baberton, like the rest of the team, had no doubt been idly watching the volcanic news (before sitting up in her chair to watch the really riveting - as opposed to rivetting on some bunker faces - the riveting stuff about the impending General Election) when gradually it had dawned that this volcanic situation wasn't looking so good. And then suddenly the flights were not endangered but cancelled. She tried everything from ferries to alternative flights to Shank's pony but sadly they were all heavily booked. West Vets do well at County Champioships

Alex got to the Semi Final stages of the Ayrshire County Championship and Jennifer reached the quarter final stages of the Renfrewshire County Championship.

New Season ---- 2010

Well, it's been a long winter but here we are at the start of a new golf season.
I am hoping to see many of you at Lanark for our first competition on Wednesday 21st April for the Spring Meeting. Maureen Mitchell will have a stock of sweaters and slipovers for sale at the meeting.
Before that Alex Glennie and I will be in Ireland to compete against the Irish Vets for the Mary McKenna Trophy. This is the 10th anniversary of this competition and the Irish team will be very keen to win the trophy (as will the Scots ----- It takes place at Portmarnock Links on the 18th/19th April.

I would like to wish everyone a very successful 2010 golfing season.

Helen Faulds and Alex Glennie selected for the Scottish Vets Team against the Irish

The Scottish Vets team to play against an Irish Senior Select team on 18th - 19th April over Portmarnock Links has been announced today. This annual tussle for the Mary McKenna Perpetual Trophy is - and isn't - the tenth anniversary of the competition. In 2006 the Irish ladies were in the process of administrative change and did not host the competition. Both sides had been slightly worried that this very popular event might disappear off the Vets Calendar but no such worries.

This year, amid celebrations of its tenth anniversary, the competition will take place over Portmarnock Links, outside Dublin, on a fairly new , but very exciting course designed by Bernard Langer. The format will be exactly the same as usual, with a four ball on Day One and singles on Day Two. The beauty of this competition is that it is fought in a very friendly atmosphere, but with daggers drawn. However the singles matches are drawn out of a hat which always causes great excitement and laughter as no one ever knows who they will play.

The team is possibly a little surprising in that there are changes from last year's winning Vets' team at Bath in the Jamboree. The captain, Pamela Williamson of Baberton - who also captained the winning team in the Senior Home Internationals at Newport - has introduced a new face - Alex Glennie from the West. Two caps from the winning Home International Team at Newport, no doubt disappointing for them, are now first and second reserves, the first of whom, Kathleen Sutherland from Royal Montrose was a reserve to the team, only being brought in when Lorna Bennett of Ladybank withdrew for personal reasons. Lorna has resumed her rightful place in the team. Noreen Fenton of Dunbar who did not play at Bath but was in the winning team at Newport has been recalled, whereas Helen Faulds from Douglas Park, who played in Bath for the successful winning team, a reserve at Newport, has now been selected. She will have a busy three days as she is also the Vice-captain.
