EAST VETS HAVE A CONVINCING WIN AT KILMACOLM

East and West Vets Teams

A strong West Vets team turned up at Kilmacolm determined to win the Elise Duncan Trophy for the first time in several years – but the East Vets team had other ideas, achieving an excellent 7-2 victory. However 4 of the 9 games went to the 18th, and Donna Jackson had an impressive 5 & 4 win.

We are indebted to Kilmacolm Golf Club for the use of their excellent course, which was enjoyed by all (despite some tricky pin positions !), and the ‘before and afters’ catering was first class.

Lady Captain Sara Bishop very kindly acted as Starter, and Club Captain Jane McDonald very  thoughtfully donated a Club crystal glass which was presented to East Vet Anne Brownie (pictured left)  who got a hole-in-one at the par 3  12th hole !

Results : West Team named first

Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) lost to Jennifer Bryans (Harburn) 3 & 1
Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle) beat Caroline Steedman (Murrayfield) 5 & 4
Liz Stewart (Greenburn) lost to Anne Hanson (Turnhouse) by 1 hole
Lesley Lloyd (Hayston) lost to Lesley Johnston (Gullane) by 1 hole
Lorraine Campbell (Cardross) halved with Sue Penman (Gullane)
Roz Purdom (Prestwick St Nicholas) lost to Sal Shepherd (Craigmillar Park) 2 & 1
Robina Gilbertson (Prestwick St Nicholas) halved with Susan Rennie (Turnhouse)
Janice Paterson (Drumpellier) lost to Dulcie Barnes (Gullane) 4 & 3

MID WEST TROPHY RETAINED BY WEST VETS AT COCHRANE CASTLE GC

West and Midland Vets Teams with Captains - June Lockhart and Lorna Bennett

The setting was perfect for the annual West v Midlands Match at Cochrane Castle this afternoon. The weather, the views across the Clyde Valley, the condition of the course, the catering and Clubhouse atmosphere plus the friendliness of the members made this a memorable occasion for all.

Many thanks to the West team for playing so well to win 5 ½ to 1 ½ but Lorna Bennett’s team pushed them hard, especially in the first 3 matches.

Lesley Lloyd is the 2018 West Vets Champion

Captain June presents Lesley Lloyd with the Championship Trophy
As the sun broke through in the morning, the course at Renfrew GC looked quite stunning with a wonderful variety of trees lining the fairways.

The first Championship Semi-Final saw Liz Stewart (Greenburn) taken to the 18th hole by Liz Keohone (Loudon Gowf ) in what was an exciting tense game.

In the other Semi-Final, Joanne Sharp  (Kilmarnock Barassie) kept up with Lesley Lloyd (Hayston) in the early stages to be only 1 down after 9. However Lesley pulled away after the 10th to win 3 & 2.

Caddy Ann Wallace, Liz Stewart Lesley Lloyd and her caddy Joanne Sharp

The Championship Final saw Lesley Lloyd take an early lead and was 3 up after 9.
Liz Stewart, however fought back quickly to be only 1 down after 12, including a birdie 4 at the 11th. However Lesley kept her nerve to end the match on the 17th, winning by 3 & 1.

In the first Stewart Trophy Semi-Final, Pam Mather (Cowglen) and Morag Little (Whitecraigs) had an adventurous ding-dong battle, but unfortunately Morag played a wrong ball out of the trees on the 17th to lose 2 & 1.
In the other Semi-Final, the much travelled Janet Buchanan (Dalmally) had a great game with Brenda Conway (Renfrew) which went on to the 19th where Brenda emerged victorious – and very thirsty and hungry !
Brenda Conway and Pam Mather

The final of the Stewart Handicap Trophy was then between Pam Mather and Brenda Conway.
Pam was up against it from early on, she won the first but Brenda then won the next three holes with long single putts.

The match continued this way with Brenda putting extremely well throughout and making it really difficult for Pam to win or half holes. The final result was 7 & 6 for Brenda.

Semi Final
Liz Stewart (Greenburn) beat Liz Keohone (Loudoun Gowf) 1up
Lesley Lloyd (Hayston) beat Joanne Sharp (Kilmarnock Barassie) 3&2

Many thanks to the supporters who turned up to watch the play and the prize-giving.
We must also praise everyone at Renfrew GC, as they made us so welcome. The course was in great condition and the catering was excellent. We also have to thank Secretary Alec Hammil for his help and support over the 2 days.

Good weather brings out the best in West Vets at Renfrew G.C.

Officials -- Sandra Mo and Christine

Though chilly at first, the sun eventually shone and the challenging course at Renfrew was in very good condition, so all the competitors enjoyed their games.

Unfortunately illness during the journey caused Liz Wilson to withdraw, so Gillian Kyle spent part of her morning at Braehead for some retail therapy.  Liz Stewart prevailed 4 & 3 over May Hughes, though it was tight after the first 9 holes, and  Liz Keohone surged ahead of Janette McCartney on the back nine, winning 5 & 4.

Our Super Vet Morag Key took Lorraine Campbell to the 16th before losing 4 & 2, and adversaries of old Jennifer Mack and Janice Paterson, had a match of 2 halves – they were all square after 9 before Janice raced ahead winning 5 & 3.  The most exciting morning match was won by Joanne Sharp after Anabel Kane (6 down after 9) pushed Joanne to the 17th green, where she won 3 & 1.  Carol Fell and Lesley Lloyd played another tight match for the first 9 holes, then Lesley took control in the back 9, eventually winning 4 & 3.  The only match which went the distance in this round was between Roz Purdom and Lynn McColl, with Roz emerging victorious.

The first afternoon match saw Gillian Kyle take an early 2 hole lead but Liz Stewart quickly drew level and kept her nose in front, eventually winning 4 & 3.  Liz Keohone and Lorraine Campbell fought a close match with Liz edging it by 2 holes, and Lesley Lloyd played very steadily to hold off Roz Purdom by 4 & 2.  Player of the day has to be Joanne Sharp who played a total of 37 holes, winning the afternoon match after 20 holes over a gallant Janice Paterson.

The Stewart Trophy 1st Round matches saw Pam Mather overcome Liz Hale on the 18th green, Morag Little beating Liz Mclean 3 & 2, Janet Buchanan beating Enid Young and Brenda Conway receiving a w/o from Pat Syme.  Hopefully all winners will return on Thursday well prepared and protected for a sunny day – can’t believe I said that !!

Gillian Kyle leads the West Vets Championship Qualifiers at Troon Portland

Gillian Kyle

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A MONTH MAKES !!

92 West Vets put recent horrible weather behind them and took part in the Summer Meeting and Championship Qualifier at Troon Portland in wonderful conditions. Viewing Arran in the background and enjoying good company made those, like myself, forget about the bad scores whilst others revelled in the conditions to produce excellent scores.

Congratulations go to overall winner Alex Glennie (pictured right) with a superb nett 70 (bih), beating Gillian Kyle also with a nett 70, but who had an amazing gross score of 72.

Morag Key

Special mention must be made of Morag Key (Ralston) who was 3rd overall with a nett 74, but was certainly the Super Vet of the day.  There must be something in the Paisley water !

DRAW FOR THE SUMMER MEETING OVER TROON PORTLAND

Before checking the draw for the Summer Meeting, we feel the following explanation is required. Over 120 members applied but we could only accommodate 93 (even with an extended 30 minutes from Troon Portland).

As this Meeting is the Championship Qualifier, the draw must be done in handicap order and unfortunately some members have had to be balloted out, although there is a waiting list and there will undoubtedly be a number of call offs nearer the time.

We understand the disappointment for some, especially in light of the Spring Meeting being cancelled, but names of those balloted out will be recorded so that they will not miss out again for the next few Spring and Autumn Meetings.

For future Summer Meetings at least, we will now apply for an extension to the tee times in an attempt to avoid this situation.

Hopefully you understand our position, but please get in touch by email if you have any comments to make, or to make suggestions for discussion at the next AGM in November.

Fingers crossed for good weather !!

Please note the following re catering at Troon for the West Vets Summer Meeting on Wednesday 16th May : Hot rolls, scones, tea and coffee will be available from 9.00am.

Light meals will be available from 11.00am until 5.00pm. Thereafter tea, coffee, sandwiches and cakes will be available for the later players until 6.00pm when the kitchen closes

WEST VETS SPRING MEETING FALLS FOUL OF THE WEATHER

Despite reporting on the above, sadly I have to inform you of the sudden death of Maggie White (Ralston), after her return from holiday in Tenerife with Morag and Bill Key.  Maggie had been a member of the West Vets for 23 years, and our thoughts are very much with her husband, Doug, and her 2 daughters.

Coffee and chat at the Spring Meeting

Now the golf – or lack of it !  We had a huge field looking forward to playing at Pollok G. C., and the Club in turn couldn’t have been more helpful both this morning and in the lead up to our Spring Meeting.  On Tuesday afternoon, I was assured the course would stand up to the weather, and indeed it had.  However the weather was worse than forecast this morning, and after Marion Stewart phoned to say she couldn’t get out of Kilmacolm as the roads were dangerously slippy, we knew the game was up.  Apologies to those who had taken time off work, but hopefully they appreciated our dilemma.

The system of block emails seems to have got to most of you in time, and for this we have to thank Secretary Sandra Macdougall for all her hard work.  However a small number of emails  bounced back, so please inform Sandra if your email has changed recently.

Finally, could we all keep fingers crossed for the Summer Meeting at Troon ?!!

June Lockhart (Wet Vets Captain)

West Vets play at Royal Belfast for Scottish Vets.

I’m sure you’ll all join with me in wishing all the best to Gillian Kyle and Lesley Lloyd as they try to retain the Mary McKenna Trophy against Irish Vets from 7-9th April.

SPRING MEETING AT POLLOK CANCELLED

Good Morning Ladies.

The Spring Meeting at Pollok today has been cancelled due to the heavy rain and sleet. Everyone who would like to meet up for coffee and a chat will be very welcome.

Apologies and hope for better weather at Troon next month.

WEST VETS INDEBTED TO POLLOK GOLF CLUB

The draw for the Spring Meeting at Pollok has been done -- CLICK HERE

West Vets owe a huge debt of gratitude to Pollok G.C. for allowing all ladies to play in our Spring Meeting, by extending the tee time from 1pm to 2.30pm.

With such a huge entry (114 !) hopefully we will support their catering as much as possible in return for their generosity.  (Catering will be available from 8.30am.)

As the car park is not very big, please try to travel with others if at all possible. Also we have tried to adhere to your travel requests, but apologies to those where it was not really possible due to the size of the field.

We will be permitted to wear sensible golf clothing on arrival and in the Clubhouse, and we will be using the spacious gents changing room for the day.

As regards the Summer Meeting at Troon Portland, the tee times are done entirely in handicap order, as this is the Championship Qualifier.

Finally, please inform our Secretary, Sandra Macdougall, of any recent changes in your club, address, email and phone number.

Fingers crossed for a great day at Pollok on 4thApril !!

PAST WEST VETS CAPTAIN ANNE BURDEN HAS DIED

It is with much sadness that Lanarkshire Ladies' County Golf Association have announced the death of Anne Burden.

Anne sadly has been ill for the past four years following a stroke but up until then was a very active lady, heavily involved in dance and in golf. and a well liked and respected member of LLCGA

Anne was a member of the Lanarkshire County Team from 1964 to 1984, during which time Lanarkshire won the County Finals 4 times.

She was County Captain from 1979 to 1981. She has been successful in many County Competitions and in 1976 won both the Blackjack Cup and County Championship.

She was made an Honorary Member of the County in 2003 and Honorary President of LLCGA from 2013 to 2015.

From 2001 to 2006 she was a Scottish International Selector and was also Captain of the West Vets in 2003 - 2004 when she took over from Aileen Wilson and then handed over to Constance Wright

She had also been a member of The Ladies Golf Club Troon, Cambuslang Golf Club and East Kilbride GC
.
We extend our sympathy to her son Mike and daughters Bobbi and Katy. and her grandchildren.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS

‘With today’s weather, it is difficult to think about golf !!’  Those were my opening words last year, so let’s hope we have more luck and better weather soon for season 2018.

Before I welcome our new members, I feel I should give you a development regarding our Summer Meeting, which may be a disappointment to some. Due to a misunderstanding on our part and on the part of Royal Troon, they were offering us Troon Portland and not the Championship course.  We do apologise but overall we will still be playing a lovely course, and for several of us this will not be nearly so daunting !!

We would like to warmly welcome a large number of new members this year, namely Catherine Malcolm (Prestwick St Nicholas),  Eileen Hutchison (Ralston), Lynda Bradley & Cherry Briggs (Kilmacolm), Carol King (Clober), Mary McLean, Laura Macdougall, Barbara Aitchison & Aileen MacIntyre (Douglas Park), Patricia Syme (Hilton Park), Debbie Peberdy (Kilmarnock Barassie), Maureen McDevitt & Julie Dickson (Whitecraigs), Jennifer Gough (Clydebank & District), Fiona Armour (Renfrew), Nanette Mutrie (Milngavie) and Carolyn Christie (Troon).

It would be great if you could put these 3 dates in your diaries for our Meetings which are as follows :
SPRING MEETING – POLLOK GC on Wed 4thApril
SUMMER MEETING – TROON PORTLAND GC on Wed 16th May
AUTUMN MEETING – DOUGLAS PARK GC on Mon 3rd September.

We would love to see as many entries as possible, as this creates a lovely atmosphere for which the West Vets is well known. We would also urge you to support the catering at each of these clubs, as they very kindly offer us courtesy of their courses.  We would also ask that you consider buying an item of our West Vets clothing, and this season Chris Fowler and Mary Wylie have worked on acquiring new gilets and shirts which hopefully will be on view at our first Meeting.  It does impress a Club when they see a large number of ladies in our colours, and some of you may also need them for our team matches.

Your fixture cards were either taken at the RLCGA Beetle Drive on Feb 4th, or they will be arriving shortly by post.

Wishing you all a most successful and enjoyable 2018 season.

Former West Vet May Muir from Ralston Golf Club has died

by Morag Key

I am sure many Members will remember the Mure sisters (May and Jessie) who were stalwarts of Ralston Golf Club, the County and the Vets

Jessie died about 25 years ago just after her 80th birthday. May sadly passed away last week and would have been 104 this Saturday. What an innings! She had been in a Care Home in Paisley for quite a long number of years now.

Jessie and May were known the length and breadth of Scotland in golfing circles and sadly there won't be any of her contemporaries left.

However, there will be a few County and Vet members who will remember May.

Her funeral is on Thursday 1st February at 10am at Woodside Crematorium in Paisley.

When I took up golf in 1981, the Mures were very encouraging and once we started going to Open Days and golfing venues around Scotland and met other golfers, it was amazing how many asked if we knew the Mures when they heard we were from Ralston.  —
We had to be on our best behaviour !

HEATHER SENDS HER THANKS

Hi All,
I saw Heather on Friday. Feeling a bit better and happy to chat. Making some progress. getting physio so been walking.

Heather has asked if all those who have sent best wishes, cards and enquired after her can be thanked.

She has appreciated all the good wishes. She would also like to specifically thank those who have visited her in hospital. As you know hospitals can mean a long day in the ward. She enjoys the company.

By the way, she has half an iron in with her - grip and half the shaft - just to keep the golf on the go !

Cheers Liz Hale.

For a further update and birthday wishes go to the RLCGA Website
