Despite a few of the West Ladies having difficulty finding Baberton Golf Course this morning after Morning Rolls and Coffee the match was played on a gloriously sunny day. 
The West were just too strong for the East and retained the Asp Trophy 3 games to 2.

Scottish Golf has announced sides for the European Senior Ladies Team Championships later this month.
The European Senior Ladies’ Team Championship takes place at Sierra GC in Poland from 30 August – 3 September.
The top two players on the Scottish Golf Senior Women’s Orders of Merit have earned selection, along with four selectors’ picks.
The two automatic selections from the Senior Women’s Order of Merit were Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) and Alex Glennie from Kilmarnock Barassie, with Lorna Bennett captain of the team.

England North win Vets' title at Panmure 

England North won the Veteran Ladies Golf Association Jamboree at Panmure Golf Club today. North and South both won twice and halved with each other to gain 2.5 points each.
The results were determined by the aggregate of individual match points; 17.5 to 15.5.

Scotland lost for the second day in a row at the Veteran Ladies Jamboree tournament over the Panmure Golf Club course near Carnoustie. They were beaten 6.5-2.5 by the England North team.

Scotland were overpowered by the England Midlands team in the singles after losing the foursomes narrowly  on the opening day of the Veteran Ladies Jamboree at Panmure Golf Club, near Carnoustie.
Midlands won 7.5-1.5 in the end and are the early leaders of the table as England's North and South teams drew 4.5-4.5 in the day's other match.

Alex Glennie - 2016 Scottish Seniors Strokeplay Champion

Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies), beaten in last year's final, is the new Scottish Senior Women's match-play champion.
She KO'd top seed Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie), winner of the stroke-play title earlier in the week, 3 and 2 in this morning's semi-finals and then beat American Ashley Rose, a Royal Dornoch member, by 3 and 2 in the final at Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Club.
Wood, two down after five holes in the final, never looked back after winning the seventh, eighth and ninth for a one-hole lead.
She eventually broke her opponent's resistance by winning the 15th and 16th to end the match.
Aileen Baker (Crail Golfing Society) won the handicap final, beating Caroline King (Clober) by 3 and 2 in the final after being one up on the 12th tee.

Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) is through to the semi-finals in her bid to become the third player in as many years to win both the stroke-play and match-play titles at the Scottish Senior Women's Championships at Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Club.
But first she will have to beat a formidable opponent in Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) in the round of the last four on Saturday morning.
Wood, beaten in last year's final by Martine Pow (Selkirk) who is not defending, won through at the 21st against Lorna McKinlay (Dunnikier Park) after being three up on the 10th tee in the quarter-finals.
Glennie beat Linda Dyball (Pitreavie) by 3 and 2 to reach the last four.
The other semi-final will feature Royal Dornoch American member, Ashley Rose and Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose). Rose was taken to the 18th green in both her ties while Sutherland also won by one hole in her quarter-final against No 2 seed Fiona de Vries (St Rule).

Alex Glennie wins title at high-scoring Scottish senior women's championship

Despite having only one birdie over 36 holes, Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) won the Scottish senior women's amateur stroke-play championship at Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Club today.
Her rounds of 77 and 78 for 13-over-par 155 gave her a two-stroke victory margin from Fiona de Vries (St Rule) (76-81) with Mary Smith (Tain) a further two shots back in third place with scores of 79 and 80.
Overnight leader Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) could manage only seven pars in a second-round 86, which included two triple bogey 7s, and her 11-stroke slump saw her slide down to a fourth place finish.
It was another day of nightmare scoring. One player took a 16 at the par-5 fourth and reached the turn in 66. There was one 11 and six 10s among the other returns.
Even the winner found the going tough. Glennie was out in 39 with a double bogey 6 at the second and another shot shed at the ninth. She then bogeyed four holes in a row from the 10th, dropped another sot at the 16th before notching a lone birdie at the 17th for halves of 39.
Runner-up De Vries had a quadruple bogey 8 at the 17th in an inward 41 for an 81.
An even local knowledge could not save Mary Smith (Tain) from running up two 7s on outward 43.
The leading 16 players qualified for the match-play championship over the next two days.
There was a five-way tie on 170 for the 16th place and, after a comparison of the second rounds, Lynne Fraser (Fortrose and Rosemarkie), who had an 80, was named the last match-play qualifier and, therefore, top seed Glennie's opponent in the first round.
Those who lost out in the countback were Jennifer Bryans (Harburn) 85, Lynn Terry (Cruden Bay) 85, Louise Graham (Carnoustie Ladies) 88 and Christine McAndrew (Nairn Dunbar) 89.

ALEX GLENNIE IS THE BEST WEST VET IN ROUND ONE OF THE 2016 SCOTTISH SENIORS

Sheena Wood leads the field at the halfway stage of the Scottish senior women's stroke-play championship at Fortrose and Rosemarkie.
The Aberdeeen Ladies GC member shot a first round of four-over-par 75 which was good enough to put her in the pole position, a stroke ahead of Fiona de Vries (St Rule and two ahead of joint third placed Dawn Young (North Berwick) and Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie).
Tain sisters Anne Ryan and Mary Smith, who would know the course better than most, are lying fifth and sixth with scores of 78 and 79 respectively.
Nobody found the course easy. County class player Meg Sievwright (Buckpool), took an 11 at the par-3 fifth hole and required 54 shots for the front nine before she finished in 96.
De Vries had a triple bogey 7 at the second and a double bogey 6 at the 12th in compiling a 76.
Leader Wood had only one birdie, at the 14th, but she avoided major disasters, although bogeying five holes, including the last two when pars would have given her a three-shot lead.
Martine Pow (Selkirk) did not enter this year after winning both the stroke-play and match-play titles 12 months ago on her debut when she beat Wood in the match-play final. Without Pow in the field, Sheena has a chance to be the third double title-winner in a row by the end of the week.

The Scratch S.V.L.G.A. West team played the East at West Kilbride for the Elise Duncan Trophy. The weather was fantastic and the course was in excellent condition,but the West team succumbed to the wonderful putting of the East team who were coached by Anne Brownie the East Captain who had been down at West Kilbride the week before.
Anne Brownie playing against Patricia Davidson was not even put off by a large branch falling off a tree at the first tee - she had to stop mid swing and managed to regroup and send her drive down the middle of the fairway.
The matches were all very close and the result of the match was not determined until the last game on the course finished May Hughes against Jane Herd which resulted in a draw so the East won 5 / 4.

GILLIAN KYLE WINS THE WEST VETS CHAMPIONSHIP

The semi finals and final of the 2016 West Vets Championship was played today in a very cold but a mainly dry day (until the last 3 holes of the Stewart Cup) at Renfrew Golf Club.
Carol Whyte ( Milngavie ) had a very close match with Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie ) with Carol winning 2 & 1.
Anabel Kane ( Kilmacolm ) again had a very exciting match - this time against Gillian Kyle ( East Renfrewshire ) with players needing birdies to win holes. Gillian eventually triumphed 3&2.

In the afternoon final Carol Whyte got off to an excellent start and was 2 up after 3 holes but Gillian fought back and was 2 up by the turn. Carol then won the 11th hole to be only 1 down but Gillian upped her game and went on to win 3&2.
Referee - West Vets Captain Marion Stewart  was tiring after the first 6 holes and nearly developed tennis elbow as the players were taking it in turns to be in bunkers!

Well done to Gillian who wins the Championship for the first time and goes forward to play at Blairgowrie to play in the S.V.L.G.A. Championship.

In the Stewart Cup (Handicap Trophy)  -- Lynn McColl (Bearsden) and Fiona Roger (Ranfurly Castle) contested the final in a most sporting manner. Having gained the initiative early on, Lynn was ahead throughout most of the match, but on 5 occasions Fiona pulled it back to all square.
However Fiona snatched victory on the 19th with a very good par 4, but both deserve credit for a well fought match.

Thanks go to Renfrew Golf Club for allowing us to host the Championship- they were very welcoming particularly the volunteer gardeners ( all life members of Renfrew G.C.) who had made the gardens around the clubhouse look like the Chelsea Flower Show.

WEST VETS CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS - ROUND 1 AND QUARTER FINALS

It was a beautifully sunny day at Renfrew Golf Club and there was some very good golf played and the scores did not reflect that in many of the games.

Anabel Kane (Kilmacolm) was the surprise player of the day. She won in the 1st round against Ayrshire County Team member Roz Purdom (Prestwick St Nicholas)  and then played fabulous golf in the afternoon quarter final against defending champion Lesley Lloyd (Hayston) .
It was a fantastic game which ended on the 18th green. Lesley was in bunker at the 18th green in two and Anabel was just short of bunker. Anabel chipped on to about 10 feet above the hole. Lesley pitched out of bunker to about 15-20 feet past and level with the hole. Lesley then slotted it in for a par and Anabel who was 1 up after 17th then had to hole a downhill twisty putt to win the game.
West Vet's Treasurer Mo Neilson and past Secretary Morag Key couldn't watch but just heard it drop in!! -- What a fantastic game they both said. -- Thanks go to Morag for all the info .
The 2015 West Vets Champion Lesley accepted her defeat graciously and congratulated Anabel on her win.

Thursday promises to be another lovely day and all today's winners looking forward to doing battle again!

MESSAGE FROM PAST CAPTAIN ANNA TELFER

Hi Everyone
Just wanted to thank you all for your kind mention of me and your good wishes.
Can you believe it?? I'm certainly in shock that my body has let me down so badly!! Who'd have thought it? Certainly not me.
Anyhow I am being well looked after in here and trying to be patient whilst my heart races on.
Once it calms down they will be able to organise suitable medication and I'll be right as rain again. I've spent most of the time dozing and not even the sight of that lovely sunshine has tempted me - I REALLY must be ill!!
Usually I'd be champing at the bit.

Was gutted to miss the Summer Meeting at Caldwell although it looked like really tricky conditions. Great video of Heather by the way. She's one amazing woman.
Lungs are now clear so that's one tablet fewer and a step nearer. Heart still too fast so I remain on the monitor but hopefully by tomorrow it'll be slow enough for them to do an ultra sound which will help with diagnosis and further treatment.
I'll hopefully see you back on the fairways soon
Another couple of days should see me sorted I hope

CAROL WHYTE HAS THE BEST SCORE IN THE SUMMER MEETING AT CALDWELL GOLF CLUB

Before providing a report on the Summer Meeting today on behalf of the West Vets we would like to wish Anna Telfer a very speedy recovery and hope the Medical Staff at the QEU Hospital have her home soon.

As we have become adept at playing in windy conditions over the last three weeks, the elements decided to challenge us yet again at Caldwell.  The skills of 78 ladies were severely tested, but as usual there were some stars.

Carol Whyte (Milngavie) scored an impressive 79 gross, with Anne Judge (Ranfurly Castle) winning the Silver Division with a 73 net (acb) over Carol Sim (Balmore) also with a 73 net.  Division 2 was won by local player Pat Robertson with a net 78, narrowly beating Lyn Black (Eastwood) with a net 79.

Super Vet of the Meeting was Evy MacGregor (Ranfurly Castle) with a net 77.  There were five 2's but special mention goes to Helen McGibbon (Kilmarnock Barassie) for a marvellous eagle 2 at the par 4 6th hole.

SPRING MEETING AT HAYSTON GOLF CLUB

On a VERY BLUSTERY but mostly dry day 78 ladies played in the the Spring Meeting at Hayston Golf Club.
The course was in good condition despite the inclement weather we have had recently. Thanks go to Anne Sillars the Lady Captain of Hayston who welcomed the players and started the competition. Thanks also to Lesley Lloyd who helped set up the competition.

Glennis Rintoul managed to park her car on a tree stump and had to get the green keepers to rescue her by jacking the car up and putting sandbags underneath - -  she still however managed to play and won the Bronze section with a nett 78.

Liz Stewart (Greenburn) had an excellent round of 76 and won the Scratch event .

Jean Irvine (Ranfurly Castle) also had an excellent round and won the Silver handicap division and the Super Vets Trophy with a nett 73.

There were 6 2's -- Patricia Richmond, Maureen.Woodhead, Anita McMillan, Helen Burnett, Liz Wilson and Patricia Davidson.

Ireland's senior women's team beat the Scottish Veteran Ladies Golf Association Select 10-2 in the annual two-day match for the Mary McKenna Trophy at Lahinch Golf Club, Co Clare.
The Irish went into the second day leading 3-1 from the four-ball matches and then took the singles - played over 14 holes so that the Scots could be sure of catching their flights homes - by a 7-1 margin.
Scotland's only winner in the singles was Lorna Bennett who had a bag of five birdies as she beat Mary Dowling 3 and 2

Ireland's senior women's team go into the final day of the annual Mary McKenna Trophy match against the Scottish Veteran Ladies Golf Association Select with a 3-1 lead from the four-balls at Lahinch Golf Club today (Sunday).

SCOTTISH SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP BACK TO ORIGINAL FORMAT

The 2016 Scottish Seniors Championship at Fortrose and Rosemarkie is for the first time going to be the OPEN Scottish Seniors Championship.
Originally  the Championship stated that it was stroke play (3 rounds) from 29th June - 1st July
However, it appears to have changed back to the original format with the matchplay following  and the dates are 29th - 30th 2 round stroke play and then the matchplay stages on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd July

Sally had a Hole in One at the 9th hole at the West Vets Spring Meeting at 
Prestwick St Cuthberts in 2010

Sally Coster (Hilton Park) pictured above with her playing partners Mamie Robin from Elderslie and Anne McKellar from Whitecraigs who had enjoyed the great event. It was Sally's 3rd Hole in One and many of the competitors enjoyed a wee glass of wine back in the clubhouse --- Compliments of Sally.

It is with great sadness I have to announce that West Vets'  Sally Coster died yesterday at home on Monday 9th February 2016. 

Sally played off a handicap of 4 in her early golfing years and was selected to play for the Scottish Vets Team at that time

A Past Captain of D&A and Past President of SVLGA had been a member of many clubs --St Andrews (St Rule), Crail, Hilton Park, Buchanan Castle  and Troon Ladies

Sally was President of the Scottish Vets Team when West Vets' Past Captain Helen Faulds was Captain of the Scottish Vets Team

Helen says -

"She was a huge help to me in many ways" .
"She was extremely knowledgeable about golfing matters, very observant at watching players and able to see faults in their swing. (I know that because she did it with me  !!)
"The players in the team were very happy to take her advice which was always given in a quiet measured manner. This ability was put to good use as she was asked to become a selector for the Scottish Teams which she really enjoyed."
"Sally had a very dry sense of humour and was extremely popular with our players, the Irish and the English players and the Presidents of all other divisions."

Sally will be most certainly missed by all.
The funeral will take place  at Maryhill Crematorium, G23 5AA, Glasgow at 3pm, Thursday 18th February.
