SCOTS GO DOWN FIGHTING AGAINST ENGLAND WHO WILL MEET WALES IN SENIORS' TITLE DECIDER
Scotland will play Wales for the wooden spoon while England and Ireland meet in the last-day title decider in the Senior Women's Home Internationals at Maesdu Golf Club, Llandudno, North Wales on Thursday.
Scotland, drubbed 8-0 by Ireland on Day 1, played a lot better against England but still lost 6 1/2 to 1 1/2.
No Scottish player has yet won a foursomes or a single match after two days' play.
But, to be fair, Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies), Alison Bartlett (Royal Dornoch) and Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) played their hearts out to halve their afternoon ties against the English who were pressing for an 8-0 scoreline so that they could go into the decider against Ireland on level games won-lost terms.
But Wood had a great match with Caroline Berry in which the last five holes were halved, including the last in birdie 4s.
Bartlett was four down after 12 holes against Catherine Rawthore but then proceeded to win four holes in a row from the 13th.
Here again the last two holes were halved.
And Glennie, four down at the turn to Amanda Mayne, won the 11th, 12th and 13th, lost the 14th but won the 15th and 17th with a great show of fighting spirit.
Ireland dumped Wales 6-2 and have a slight edge over England in the games-won column as they fight for the major honours.
Ireland are the defending champions and also won the European seniors title in Slovenia last month

Alison, playing par golf, reached the turn in an approximate 36 shots and had established a five-hole lead.
Alex came back into the game after the turn but ran out of holes in the end.
Alison was winning the Scottish Veterans' Title for the first time. The championship is contested by the eight divisional title winners and this is the first year that Alison had been Highland vets' championship.

TAIN'S MARY SMITH IS TOP SCOT IN ROYAL PORTRUSH ENDURANCE TEST
And Mary is already looking forward to next year because this over-50s tournament, normally played over 54 holes, will be hosted next year by Royal Dornoch Golf Club from September 16 to 18.
Mary had two rounds of 85 for 170 over a par-75 course which had a CSS of 79 (reduction only) for both counting rounds ... proof that the weather was awful and the course too long and too tough for the majority over the competitors.
Mary finished joint 15th in a field of 93 - 10 shots behind the 54-year-old Welsh winner Ann West who birdied the last hole to win by a shot on 160 from overnight leader Minna Kaarnalahti (Finland) and Sheena McElroy (Ireland).
Fiona De Vries (St Rule) also achieved a creditable top 20 finish with scores of 82 and 89 for 171.
Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose) finished 32nd on 175 with rounds of 86 and 89 while Mary Smith's sister and clubmate, Ane Ryan tied for 40th place on 177 with rounds of 91 and 86.

SENIOR BRITISH WOMEN'S OPEN
By COLIN FARQUHARSON

REPORTING FROM ROYAL PORTRUSH
St Andrews hotelier Fiona De Vries was the best of the 10 Scots in the international-class field at the end of a long, wet and tiring first day in the Senior British Women's Open amateur stroke-play golf championship over the Royal Portrush links in Northern Ireland today.
Over a par-75 course playing very long because of recent rain - and with lots more rain falling during the round - only a handful of players broke 80 and the lead was snatched by Flying Finn Minna Kaaarnalahti who had six birdies in posting a late-in-the-day par 75 to take the lead.
But the Finn was the exception. For the majority of the field the Royal Portrush was too long and the conditions too tough.
So, with that in mind, full marks to Fiona De Vries for ending the first round in joint 10th place with an 82, despite a double bogey 7 at the long seventh in halves of 39-43.
Mary Smith from Tain is in joint 23rd place with an 85 (42-43).
Rookie senior Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) was up on the leaderboard with an outward half of 39 but the cold and the wet got to her over the second nine which cost her 47 blows for an 86.
But she is well placed to survive the halfway cut to the leading 40 and ties in this 54-hole event.
Also on 86 is Royal Montrose's Kathleen Sutherland with halves of 42-44
Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) had an 87 (44-43) and Blairgowrie's Heather Anderson an 89 (45-44) and she had to birdie the long 18th to break 90!
May Hughes (Lanark) had a 90 (45-45) and on 91 were Anne Ryan (Tain), Pamela Williamson (Baberton) and Alison Bartlett (Royal Dornoch).

GERTIE MULLEN WINS IRISH SENIOR WOMEN'S OPEN AT CASTLEROCK
NEWS RELEASE FROM IRISH LGU
Ireland’s Gertie McMullen (The Island) fired a final round 79 to defeat Canada’s Diane Williams by four strokes to win her first Irish Senior Women’s Open Strokeplay title at Castlerock Golf Club.
As the gale force winds and torrential rain abated for the first time all week, overnight leader McMullen started shakily to lose the lead and stood four over par on the fifth tee. However she settled impressively into the round to complete the next fourteen holes in level par to secure the title.
Canada’s Williams matched her 79 to finish second while team mate Diane Dolan went one better with a 78 to finish third. Along with USA’s Mary Kay Zordani , past Champion Alison Murdoch (CAN) fired a best-of-the-day 77 to finish sixth while Irish Seniors Close Champion Suzanne Corcoran (Portumna) finished one further back in seventh place. In the Nations Cup, Canada B finished strongly to push Ireland B and England A into joint second place.
