Message from Colin Farquharson
To all West Vets :
I hear on the grapevine that we may be getting a group of Welsh seniors at the Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Golf Festival (Feb 10 to 23).
Are there enough single-figure handicappers in the West Vets' ranks to mount some opposition? Click on the Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Golf Festival link to read all about the fantastic golfing holiday you can go on

North of England win the Miller Stirling Trophy
Scotland's veteran women's golfers lost their two-year grip on the Miller Stirling Trophy on the final day of the Veteran Ladies Golfing Association's area championship at Royal Cromer Golf Club, Norfolk.
After drawing their matches on the first two days, the Scots, skippered by Pat Hutton, needed to beat England South and hope that Midlands and North drew the other match.
It was not to be. South edged a 5-4 win over the Scots and North beat Midlands 8-1 to take the title.
"I couldn't have asked for a bigger effort from my team but I think they were just drained by their efforts in the European senior women's team championship last week. I don't think they had anything left to give in the final session," said Mrs Hutton.
The Scots won the morning foursomes 2 1/2-1/2 against South but lost the singles 4 1/2-1 1/2. Only Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) managed a 2 and 1 win while Heather Anderson (Downfield) secured a square game.
Details:

Helen Wins in Scots Veterans draw against England (North)
Defending champions Scotland showed a lot of grit and determination to salvage a 4 ½-4 ½ draw with England North on the opening day of the Veteran Ladies Golf Association inter-area golf team championship at Royal Cromer Golf Club, Norfolk today.

"It was a good performance to get a draw from the position we were in," said Pat Hutton.
Incidentally, the England North line-up included former Scottish women's amateur champion and international team captain Fiona Anderson who has been based on Merseyside for a number of years.
Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh), partnering Lorna Bennett, had a hole in one at the 17th in their foursome against Hilary Smythe and Elaine Elliot.
It was the third ace of Noreen's golfing career. It squared the match but Noreen and Lorna lost the 18th to go down by one hole.
In the other match in the four-cornered contest, England Midlands beat England South 5 ½-3 ½.

West Vets lose out to Midlands
The Mid West Trophy match was played in perfect summer conditions on the very attractive Schawpark course in Alloa
West was represented by Carol Fell, Jennifer Graham, Elinor Grant, Elspeth Dewar, Sandra Gilchrist, Anne Mackellar and Sheila Shaw.
Midlands were represented by Jean Bald, Sheila Travers, Liz Cunningham, Eva Muller-Allan, Fiona Campbell, Fiona Glass and Danuta McLachlan.
It was a tight match producing many good games and culminating in a nailbiting finish with everyone gathered round for the last putt on the last green..
Sadly West lost by 4 games to 3. but all credit to Midlands for their fine play. Although it was a home game for their team only their Captain Sheila Travers was a member of Alloa.
Many thanks to Sheila and her players for their friendly welcome and hospitality today. We were sorry to leave the Mid West Trophy behind but have already vowed to try harder next year.

SCOTS WIN MARY McKENNA TROPHY FOR FOURTH YEAR IN A ROW
Scotland’s veteran women golfers won the Mary McKenna Trophy for the fourth year in a row with a 9 ½-4 ½ win over their Irish counterparts, playing under the banner of “Mary McKenna Select” at Southerness Golf Club on the shores of the Solway Firth today (Monday).
The Scots carried over a 4-l lead from the first day and took the second-day singles 5 ½-3 ½.
Who played whom in the singles ties was decided by ballot rather than by the traditional manner of the respective captains choosing the order.
Fittingly, Mary McKenna won her tie, beating Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) by 4 and 3. But, as far as the Irish were concerned, it was too little too late as by that time Scotland had won the first five singles through Margaret Tough (Falkirk Carmuirs), Fiona DeVries (St Rule), Moira Thomson (North Berwick), Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose) and Pamela Williamson (Baberton).
Ireland’s tail wagged to win 3 1/2pt from the last four ties.
SCOTTISH VETERANS 9 ½, MARY McKENNA SELECT 4 ½
Southerness Golf Club.
First-day score: Scottish Veterans 4, Mary Mckenna Select 1.
Second-day details (Scots first):
M Tough bt E McMullen 3 and 1, F DeVries bt V Hassett 2 and 1, M Thomson bt M Madden 4 and 2; K Sutherland bt A Molony 5 and 3, P Williamson bt M Henderson 3 and 2, H Faulds lost to M McKenna 4 and 3, L Bennett lost to R Fanagan 3 and 2, N Fenton halved with S O’Brien-Kenney; L Campbell lost to R English 1 hole (5 ½-3 1/2).

Message from Captain Pat Walker
Hello Everyone,
One of these days the Monsoon season will come to an end and golfing will be a pleasure again.
Our first West Vets event is the Spring Meeting at West Kilbride on 24th April.
Times will be pre allocated and already we have a HUGE entry. This is the Qualifier for the Championship and the Bronze Salver so a fine sunny day would be welcome.
We do our best but everyone can't have a time between 10 and 10.30!! I know you will understand this.
Looking forward to seeing you then.
Please aim to be at the first tee 5 minutes before your start time.
All best wishes for a good golfing season
From Pat
PS We will have a good selection of West Vets sweaters and slipovers at West Kilbride for anyone interested
