Scotland’s veteran women golfers won the Mary McKenna Trophy for the fourth year in a row with a 9 ½-4 ½ win over their Irish counterparts, playing under the banner of “Mary McKenna Select” at Southerness Golf Club on the shores of the Solway Firth today (Monday).
The Scots carried over a 4-l lead from the first day and took the second-day singles 5 ½-3 ½.
Who played whom in the singles ties was decided by ballot rather than by the traditional manner of the respective captains choosing the order.
Fittingly, Mary McKenna won her tie, beating Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) by 4 and 3. But, as far as the Irish were concerned, it was too little too late as by that time Scotland had won the first five singles through Margaret Tough (Falkirk Carmuirs), Fiona DeVries (St Rule), Moira Thomson (North Berwick), Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose) and Pamela Williamson (Baberton).
Ireland’s tail wagged to win 3 1/2pt from the last four ties.
