Janice Paterson makes the cut for the final round at the Irish Seniors

Canadian Alison Murdoch leads the field by one stroke going into tomorerow's final round of the Irish Senior Women’s Open Strokeplay at Laytown and Bettystown Golf Club.
West Vets Janice Paterson had another good round today to be in 10th place after the 2nd round.
The top 40 players now complete a final 18 holes on Thursday to decide the title.

Janice Paterson does well in the first round of the Irish Seniors

In driving rain and gale force winds West Vets Committee member Janice Paterson (Drumpellier) was only 4 shots of the lead at the Irish Senior Women’s Open Strokeplay at Laytown and Bettystown Golf Club today.

The field will play a further 18 holes strokeplay tomorrow Wednesday with the top 40 qualifying for the final 18 holes on Thursday

Scotland finished sixth in the European senior women's amateur team championship at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club, south of Dublin in Co Wicklow on Friday 4th September:
They lost 4-1 to France in the play-off for fifth place having beaten Ireland the day before by 3 - 2

Scots lose to England in the European Seniors

Scotland lost 3 1/2-1 1/2 to England on a day when top seeds and hosts Ireland surprisingly went down by a similar scoreline to Germany, the last of the eight qualifiers for the top flight of the European senior women's amateur team golf championship at Dun Laoghaire.
In the semi-finals it will be England v Germany and Spain and France v Italy.
Italy, the No 7 qualifiers, beat Sweden, the defending champions and second seeds, 3-2.
Scotland's only winners in a match decided over one foursome and four singles were the alternate shot pairing of Heather Anderson (Alyth) and Fiona Hunter (Baberton). They beat Christine Stirling and Lucy Newton by 2 and 1.
In the singles, Mary Smith (Tain) lost by 2 and 1 to Chris Quinn, Fiona De Vries (St Rule lost by 4 and 3 to Janet Melville and Moira Thomson (Gullane Ladies) lost by 3 and 2 to Sue Dye.
Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) had a square match with Jo Ashmore.
The best that Scotland can now achieve is fifth place and the first hurdle to be cleared in that direction is a strong Ireland team who will be smarting after their unexpected reverse on home turf.

Scotland Seniors -- Qualify for the Matchplay Stages

On another day of wind and rain, Scotland improved from 423 to 416 in their stroke-play qualifying rounds and made it through with ease to the championship flight match-play stages of the European senior women's amateur team golf championship at Dun Laoghaire, Ireland.
The Scots, for whom Alyth's Heather Anderson went from a non-counting score on Monday to a team-best 79, qualified as No 5 in the eight-team flight.
Conversely, Fiona De Vries (St Rule), who had been Scotland's lowest scorer in the first round, had the non-counting score of 87 today.
They will play England in their first-round tie.
Scotland's second-round scores were:
79 Heather Anderson (Alyth) 39-40.
82 Mary Smith (Tain) 41-41.
85 Moira Thomson (Gullane) 42-43, Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) 42-43, Fiona Hunter (Baberton) 41-44.
Non-counting score:
87 Fiona De Vries (St Rule) 41-46.

Congratulations go to West Vets Captain Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) who won the Elie Club Championship today for the 3rd year in a row to add to her Bearsden Golf Club Championship win earlier this month and the Douglas Park Golf Club Championship in June.

West Vets retain ASP Trophy against East

The West Vets played their annual foursomes match to-day against the East over Troon Portland. This match has been taking place for over 30 years. Noting the lack of something to play for, the ASP Trophy (Amicitia Semper Palma - Friendship Always the Prize) was kindly donated , a few years ago, by Asp Robertson from the East.
Between 9 and 10am this morning the weather was anything but good. However by the time we all met for coffee at 10, the views over Royal Troon to Arran were improving by the minute, and by tee off time at 11, the sun was beginning to shine and we enjoyed a lovely windless day! The matches were closely contested and the result was honours even - 2.5 : 2.5. The West having won last year at Gullane retain the Trophy for the coming year.
Our thanks go to Royal Troon for the courtesy of the course and to the staff at The Ladies Club for looking after us so well. A lovely day was had by all and we look forward to next year's match in the East.

Hi--THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN REPORTING --- just back from Bath Golf Club where we managed to retain the Miller Stirling Salver in The Inter Area Jamboree. We had a great time despite the weather threatening to cause chaos.

Good luck to Vice Captain Fiona and her team who play their East counterparts at Troon Portland on Monday.

Scotland retained the Miller Stirling Trophy at the Veteran Ladies Golf Association Jamboree, completing a 100 per cent record through three days of competition at a very wet Bath Golf club course by beating England South 5 1/2-3 1/2.
After the morning foursomes were shared, victories in the singles by Lorna Bennett (Ladybank), Heather Anderson (Alyth) Moira Thomson (North Berwick) and Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose) clinched victory.
In the other last-day match, England Midlands beat England North 5-2.

Scotland Vets squeeze through to victory over England Midlands and Helen comes up trumps

Scotland took another step towards retaining the Miller Stirling Trophy when they made it two match wins out of two by beating England Midlands 5-3 at the Veteran Ladies Golf Association Jamboree at Bath Golf Club.
Overnight rain made the greens unplayable until the afternoon. The match was decided on a singles only basis.
The Scots’ tail wagged to pull them through to victory after England Midlands established lead with success at the top of the batting order.
Lorna Bennett was won down on the 18th tee but won the last hole to save half a point in her match against Jo Ashmore.
Mary Smith was two down with three to polay but won the 16th and 17th from Julie Walters and halved the lost for another half-point salvaged.West Vets Captain Helen Faulds was all square for much of the match against Angela Dawson and stayed that way even after going out of bounds at the 17th. She sank a long putt to halve the hole and then kept her nerve to win the 18th for the match.
In the other match, England North beat England South 6-2.

Scotland Vets make good start-- and West Vets Captain Helen is a winner

Scotland made a good start to their defence of the Miller Stirling Trophy in the Veteran Ladies Golf Association Jamboree at Bath Golf Club today (Tuesday).
On a very wet day, they splashed their way to a 7 ½-1 ½ win over England North, whose line-up included former Scottish women’s champion Fiona Anderson from Blairgowrie but now living and working in the Manchester area.
The Scots took the foursomes 3-0 and wins in the singles by Fiona de Vries, Kathleen Sutherland, Mary Smith and Helen Faulds and a square match by Lorna Bennett gave them 4 ½ pt out of a possible six in the afternoon.

Northern Vets -- Alyth's Heather Anderson, a former Downfield player, won the Scottish senior women's close amateur match-play golf championship over the Montgomery course, Kinross today (Friday).
16th Qualifier from the Strokeplay rounds Heather continued her good form by beating West Vets Alex Glennie in this mornings 1st Semi Final and then beat former Scottish girls champion Moira Thomson (Gullane Ladies) by 5 and 3 in the final with approximately two over par figures.
Moira (pictured below) led only once in the match, with a par at the first hole, but Heather then won four of the next five holes to be two up after six. Heather took a grip on the outcome when she won four holes in a row from the ninth to improve from two up to five holes ahead.

Alex Glennie through to the Scottish Seniors Semi Finals

West Vets Alex Glennie and Helen Faulds met in the Quarter finals of the Scottish Seniors Championship at Kinross this afternoon. In a tight match Alex won 2 and 1 and now meets Heather Anderson in the semis tomorrow. The other West Vets that had qualified for the matchplay stages were Suzanne Cadden and Anna Telfer. Suzanne won in the morning against Sheila Cuthbertson (Peebles) but lost in the quarter Finals against Heather Anderson.
Anna lost in the morning -- however in the 2nd flight quarter finals she beat Frances Neish and now meets Kathleen Sutherland tomorrow

4 West Vets reach the Matchplay stages of the Scottish Seniors

Congratulations go to West Vets Alex Glennie, Anna Telfer, Suzanne Cadden and Helen Faulds whohave all qualified for the Match play stages of the Scottish Seniors over the Montgomerie Course at Kinross today. In exceedingly humid conditions it was terrific achievement for our West Vets Super Stars.
PIRITON came to the fore when these horrible insects came out to put you off your putting.
However, despite the difficulties Alex Glennie won 4th Scratch in the Strokeplay event, Suzanne Cadden received the 3rd Handicap award with Anna Telfer the 1st Handicap prize

East Vets v West Vets --- East retain the Elise Duncan Trophy

Playing over Gullane No 1, East Vets managed to retain the Elise Duncan trophy, being very reluctant to part company with it after having had a firm hold on it for the last few years. The score of 7 - 2 for the East however belied the fact that it was actually a very close run match where six out of the nine games went right to the 18th hole

West Vets Bronze Champion Maureen Rennie continued her good form by winning the Sheila Conacher Trophy (Mixed Foursomes) at Douglas Park yesterday with her husband Jim.

Our annual singles match against the East Vets takes place on Wednesday 17th June. East are hosts this year at Gullane no.1 with the first game starting at 3pm. They are also holders of the trophy-The Elise Duncan Trophy - so we will be trying very hard to bring the cup back to the West.

West Division Championship Final

The postponed final of the West Vets championship took place today at Renfrew Golf Club between our captain, Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) and Linda MacDougall (Greenock). The course was in extremely good order and the overhead conditions were ideal for golf. Helen played extremely good, steady golf and was the very worthy winner. We wish her well when she heads to Blairgowrie in September to compete in match play against the other Scottish area champions.

As promised here is the result of the Bronze Championship played today over Renfrew.

The game was played in good conditions and in a great spirit. Maureen & Anne had a good game but the former was playing beautifully round and on the greens. I don't think she missed a putt the whole match!

Helen reaches the quarter finals of the Clark Rosebowl at Southerness

At Southerness West Vets Captain -- Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) won through to the second round of the Clark Rosebowl.
She beat fellow Scottish Vet Jill Harrison from Cruden Bay by 3 and 2.
She then lost 2 and 1 to Linda Urqhuart of Banchory.

Scottish Senior Championship

The closing date for the Scottish Ladies' Senior (Close) Championship to be held over the Montgomery Course at Kinross, 30 June - 3 July is Monday 1 June. The Championship is for those over 50 years of age on the first day of the Championship with a handicap of 20 or less. An entry form is available from the SLGA website.

Scots Vets lead Irish by One Point at Cruden Bay

The Scottish Veteran Ladies Golf Association select will start the second and last day of their annual Mary McKenna Salver match with a 2 1/2-1 1/2 lead over the Irish Seniors team at Cruden Bay Golf Club.
The match finishes with eight singles, the first of which tees off at 11am on Sunday.
The Scots' winners today were Lorna Bennett and Fiona De Vries who beat Sheena McElroy and Marilyn Henderson 3 and 2, and Jill Harrison, and Fiona Hunter who beat Helen Jones and Mary McKenna by one hole in a match of rare quality - the better ball was an amazing 10 under par.
Ireland's win came from Valerie Hassett and Violet McBride who beat May Hughes and Kathleen Sutherland by 2 and 1.
The halved match featured Scotland's Heather Anderson and Mary Smith against Ireland's Mary Madden and Pauline Walsh.

Congratulations go to West Vets Captain Helen Faulds who despite being a "Veteran" reached the Semi Final stages of the Dunbarton and Argyll County Championships at Hayston Golf Club this week

She started the match well with a birdie 3 --- sinking a 42ft putt at the 1st. However she eventually lost to the eventual winner - Scottish Internationalist Kyle Walker

May Hughes in action in the Mary McKenna Trophy

The leading senior women golfers in Scotland and Ireland will be in action at Cruden Bay this weekend in the annual match for the Mary McKenna Salver.
The 2008 West Vets Champion May Hughes is in the Scottish Team and we wish her and the team every success
Mary McKenna, eight times Irish champion who played in nine successive Curtis Cup matches and is the current Great Britain & Ireland team captain, is just one member of a very strong Irish team of over-50 year olds.
The Scots, captained by home-course player Lynne Terry, are bidding for a hat-trick of victories having won the match in 2007 and 2008. The Irish have not won the trophy since the first three years of the competition - 2000, 2001 and 2002 - but with the players who have made the trip to the classic Cruden Bay links - where Ireland won the women's home internationals title in 1980 and 2003, they will start slight favourites to take the salver back to the Emerald Isle.
Play starts at 11am on Saturday (four-balls) and Sunday (singles).

Along with Scottish Golf Development Manager Andy Salmon of the SGU they were asked questions about Centralised Handicapping, the Counties Centenary Year, Womens Golf and the Scottish Golf Awareness week which is on this week (13th - 20th April 2009).

A very strong wind, a long playing course, and slow greens at SANDYHILLS GOLF COURSE exhausted but did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the fifty one ladies who took part in the West Vets Spring Meeting today which was also the qualifier for the 2009 Divisional Championship.

West Vets Janice Paterson partnered by Barbara Biggart were 15th in the Spanish Seniors "Doubles" in Spain today. Pamela Williamson and Diane Williams (Canada) were 10th.
The Swedes Christina Birke and Anki Hermanson comfortably won the Spanish Open Senior Ladies Amateur Championship by 4 shots,

The 2009 Spanish Seniors kicks off-- Janice and Barbara survive the rain

The Spanish Open Senior Ladies Championships started today at the Arcos Gardens Golf Club which is located on the outskirts of Arcos de la Frontera in the province of Cadiz Spain.
West Vets Committee member Janice Paterson (Drumpellier) phoned me this evening to say that after the 1st round of the Foursomes (Doubles) event Janice partnered with Barbara Biggart scored a 79 in the 1st round.
Pamela Williamson and Diane Williams (Canada)had a very good 78. Apparently play was halted due to rain and har at the 14th hole but they had been able to continue later on.
The leading score after the 1st round was 68 by Cornelia Schmidt-Stutzle and Jacob Edeltran (Germany)

Janice Paterson is in Spain to play in the Spanish Senior Ladies Championship

West Vets Committee member Janice Paterson (Drumpellier) is taking part in the Spanish Open Senior Ladies Championships at Arcos Gardens Golf Club which is located on the outskirts of Arcos de la Frontera in the province of Cadiz Spain. The event runs from the 10th - 13th February 2009. We wish her every success. Also competing is Barbara Biggart formerly of Kilmacolm who now lives in the East of Scotland

Helen is in the Hot seat again !!

Midlothian County held their Centenary lunch yesterday in Edinburgh and the toast to the Game of Golf was given by West Vets Captain Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) Her humourous and witty speech was interrupted by a fire alarm, which only added to the occasion as doors to George Street were opened and 177 lightly dressed people trooped out onto the street on a bitterly cold Edinburgh afternoon. Spirits were high and everyone remained cheerful... it gave some another chance to have a chin-wag with long-lost friends. After about 15 minutes the all-clear was given and the company resumed their seats... Helen carried on as if nothing had happened and, at its conclusion, her scintillating speech received a standing ovation.

Captain Helen is a Burns Supper Star

West Vets Captain Helen Faulds was in fine form on Friday evening when she gave the reply on behalf of the lassies at Douglas Park Golf Club's Burns Supper. After the dinner she was presented with some beautiful crystal glasses. --- She really was very very good. Well done Helen

A Scottish Christmas Fairy

I am a little fairy
On tap o' the Christmas Tree
It's no' a job I fancy

A tarted up wi' tinsel

Little socks have raised lots of cash

EMMA WILSON, from Kirkcaldy, (the Midlands Vets Vice Captain) lost her 87-year-old mother to breast cancer last year.

Afterwards she started raising money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer and was slightly surprised when they got in touch to ask if she’d undertake a challenge to raise £1000

A Message from Emma
I can report I am taking a cheque for £775 tomorrow and my total so far is £2978. If any club or person wishes to collect I have plenty wee pink socks knitted just let me know.

It is great to have cheerie news instead of credit crunch all the time.
