SENIOR WOMEN'S HOME INTERNATIONALS AT HUDDERSFIELD
SCOTS LET FOURSOMES LEAD SLIP IN SINGLES AGAINST WELSH DRAGONS
Scotland's hopes of winning the Senior Women's Home Internationals title at Huddersfield Golf Club, Yorkshire suffered a body blow when they lost their opening match 4 1/2-3 1/2 to Wales.
In the other opening match, Ireland, champions for the past two years, were cut down to size by England 5 1/2-2 1/2.
Things looked promising for the Scots when they took the morning foursomes 2-1 but they were outplayed by the Welsh dragons in the singles.
Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) and Anne Ryan (Tain) both fell two down very early on to Jane Rees and Ann Lewis respectively. In the end Wood lost by 3 and 2, Ryan by 5 and 3.
Scotland's only double winner was Northern Counties LGA secretary Alison Bartlett who formed a good foursomes partnership with Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) and then beat former Curtis Cup player Vicki Thomas by 2 and 1.
Mary Smith (Tain) was held to a square match and Fiona de Vries (St Rule) lost heavily, 6 and 5, in the final tie against Sharon Roberts.

This is the message that West Vets Captain Anna has sent ---
Super Scottish Seniors win in Austria!!!!
In a very very close match against Belgium, the Scots triumphed 3.5 to 1.5. The 4somes pairing of Alison Bartlett and Alex Glennie won at the 19th, Sheena Wood played the back 9 in 3 under par to win on the very tricky 18th. With equal nerves of steel, Mary Smith also triumphed on the 18th. Anne Ryan was under the cosh from the start and lost 6 and 5 but by then the match was secured and as is the custom in this tournament, Fiona De Vries's match was declared a half ( even tho she was 1 up after 17.
Captain Anna Telfer is over the moon and "vewy vewy pwoud" of her players "it was a match of 2 halves but thankfully we played the second half so much better"
Next up is Spain for the play-off for 5th and 6th place.
MESSAGE FROM CAPTAIN ANNA AT THE EUROPEAN SENIORS
As you can imagine it was fantastic to be playing golf today - and in the sunshine too!!!!
Three of the very wet holes had been shortened to par 3s and the 18th was cut to a par 4. This didn't make it any easier and there were preferred lies in operation.
The Scottish team played really well despite the difficult and wet conditions and achieved the target we had set ourselves. This was to finish in the top flight of 8 teams and we actually finished 7th. Unfortunately because of the curtailed tournament, there are only flights of 4 and so we are in the 2nd group. Tomorrow we play Belgium, starting at 10:06am.
Today's top performer was Sheena Wood, who played superbly. She was one over after 15 holes, but 2 double bogeys at 16 and 18 spoilt what had been an excellent round. These are both testing holes over water and caused many a high score. Alison Bartlett also had a good round - very steady play. The others were disappointed in their scores but I can't emphasise just how difficult it was - especially for the early grouping of Mary, Anne and Fiona. They were out when the ground was even wetter with the dew.
Anyway, on to the match play rounds now and I'm confident we will do well
