We are delighted to announce the Team which will represent the SVLGA at next month's Jamboree at Frilford Heath Golf Club, Oxfordshire.

Most of the Team selected were part of the successful Scottish Team which beat the Irish Seniors at Murcar in April, bringing home the Mary McKenna Perpetual Trophy after a nine-year absence. Joining us for the Jamboree will be Jennifer Bryans, the current Vets' Champion who recently successfully defended her East Vets title and newly-crowned Senior Stroke-Play Champion Frances Millar. Donna Jackson is making her Jamboree debut and brings with her a wealth of both County and International experience, not to say youth, being the youngest member of the Team!
The Team comprises an excellent mix of personalities who all bring not only their golfing skills with them but a great Team spirit and eagerness to be successful.
The Jamboree matches will take place from the 8th to the 10th of August at Frilford Heath GC, Oxfordshire. The foursomes matches start at 8.30am and the singles at 1.05pm each day. If anyone should be in the area and would like to come and support us, you would be made most welcome.

Fiona De Vries (St Rule) won the 2017 Scottish Senior Women's Matchplay Championship over Blairgowrie this afternoon with a fantastic display of golf against last year's winner Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies)

In the morning in a tight game against West Vet Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) she won by 1 hole while Sheena who was 2 down for a period of time managed to win on the 19th hole against Lorna McKinlay (Dunnikier Park)

West Vet Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) looked to be heading for the lead at Blairgowrie today in the 1st round of the Scottish Women's Senior Open Championship when she birdied the 14th after dropping shots at the second, fourth and sixth, but unfortunately finished weakly with bogeys at the 16th, 17th and 18th for a share of third place on 79.

WEST VETS NARROWLY LOSE OUT TO EAST VETS IN THE ELISE DUNCAN TROPHY AT MORTONHALL GOLF CLUB

Mortonhall Golf Club was the perfect setting for the Annual East v West Vets Match for the Elise Duncan Trophy. The fine, testing course along with the good weather was enjoyed by all, but the East Vets retained the Trophy, narrowly beating the West 5-4.

The match couldn’t have had a better start, with Donna Jackson achieving an eagle 2 at the first hole ! However despite losing overall, there was lots of good golf played, and all players should feel justifiably proud of their commitment and effort.

As usual the camaraderie was evident on the course and in the clubhouse during the meal, and we must thank Mortonhall G.C. and East Vets Captain Caroline Kinnaird for hosting such an enjoyable day.

LIZ STEWART WINS THE 2017 WEST VETS CHAMPIONSHIP

For once we were treated to some wonderful weather, which showed Renfrew Golf Club at its best. The fairways were in very good condition, but all players found the greens very difficult due to dressings which had been sprayed beforehand.

The morning’s play saw 3 of the 4 matches tied after 9 holes, and in the 4^th match Carole Hill (Hilton Park) was in control and eventually ran out the winner by 5 & 4 over Glynis Rintoul (Old Ranfurly) to reach the final of the Stewart Trophy. In the other semi-final, the players had to go down the 18^th before Morag Key (Ralston) eventually prevailed over Helen Burnet (Hilton Park),  winning by 2 holes.

In the Championship, both semi-final  matches were keenly contested with some great golf, and it took a birdie by Liz Keohone (Loudoun Gowf) to see off Nicky Henderson (Haggs Castle) by 2 & 1 and reach the final. In the other semi-final, Liz Stewart (Greenburn) found Anabel Kane (Kilmacolm) a difficult opponent to beat, especially as both played the front 9 in 39. It took 2 long putts by Liz to secure victory on the 16^th green.

In the Championship Final, Liz Stewart got off to a good start and was quickly 2 up. Several holes thereafter were halved until Liz Stewart pulled away to be 4 up. However as expected, Liz Keohone pegged 2 holes back but was unable to force the game down the 18^th, so Liz Stewart became the Champion for the first time.

Carole Hill - Stewart Cup Winner and Morag Key

The Stewart Trophy Final proved another tough effort between new Vet Carole Hill and the ‘evergreen’ Morag Key. Considering that both ladies are not used to playing 2 rounds in a day, especially in those warm conditions, they played consistently good golf. However the ‘youngster’ Carole eventually prevailed on the 16^th green, winning 3 & 2.

We would like to thank Renfrew Golf Club once again for hosting the 2 days play, and all members who were most welcoming. WEST VETS CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST ROUND AND QUARTER FINAL RESULTS -

The morning’s play in the Championship started with a tie between 2 of the favourites, Donna Jackson and Lesley Lloyd. This match was tight all the way until Donna clinched it on the 18^th.  Another 18 hole nail biter took place where Anne Shanks edged out Lynn McColl, but the tie between Roz Purdom and Lorraine Campbell had to go down the 19^th before Roz proved victorious. 

The other winners in round 1 were Nicky Henderson, Liz Keohone, Liz Stewart, Anabel Kane and May Hughes.

The afternoon’s play in the Championship saw more exciting games, although it was rather spoiled by rain which was not forecast to all except Morag Key !! 

This time Roz Purdom could not prevail going down the 19^thagain, as Liz Stewart won through to the semi-final. 

Nicky Henderson and Donna Jackson served up a tight game as did Anabel Kane and May Hughes. 

Congratulations go to both Nicky and Anabel for winning through to the semi-finals. 

The last semi-finalist will be Liz Keohone, but I’m sure she will join me in congratulating her opponent Anne Shanks, who has done so well in her first season with the Vets.

The afternoon also saw 4 ties in the Stewart Cup, with Helen Burnet, Morag Key, Carole Hill and Glynis Rintoul progressing to the semi-finals.

Thursday will see all the winners take to the fairways again at Renfrew, with the Championship play starting at 9.30am and play for the Stewart Cup starting at 9.44 am. 

The Championship Final will take place at 2pm, followed immediately by the Stewart Cup Final at 2.10pm. 
Supporters will be most welcome, so please come along and enjoy the day’s play.

Ten West Vets travelled through to Auchterarder looking forward to playing the course and trying to win the Mid West Trophy. For a short time it looked like rain was going to spoil the day, but the skies quickly cleared and along with the lovely scenery, the girls really enjoyed the match and ran out winners by 7 games to 3.

The greens looked good but the par 3 pin positions really tested the players. However all matches were played in a wonderful spirit, and Captain Lizee McGraw and her team looked after us so well. We therefore look forward to hosting the Midlands team in the West next year.

78 ladies played in the Summer Meeting in lovely weather and enjoyed the ‘apres golf’ alfresco !
The course looked splendid, although the ground conditions made it difficult to approach and hold the greens.

The Heather Anderson Trophy was won by Lesley Lloyd with a gross 79, the Super Vet was Helen Burnet with a nett 73 but the biggest star was Ann Shanks with an amazing nett 68. The Division 2 winner was Gladys Rintoul ( nett 75 ) with runner-up Janette Stewart ( nett 76 ).

The Scottish Veteran Ladies Golf Association team beat the Irish senior women's team 6.5 to 5.5 at Murcar Links Golf Club today to win the Mary McKenna Trophy for the first time since 2009.
Scotland took a 1pt lead in the first-day foursomes and just managed to hold on to that advantage by drawing the singles 4-4.
The Irish had won the last seven years in this fixture in which the venue alternates between Scotland and Ireland.
The vital Scottish victories in the singles came from Lorna McKinlay (Midland), Gillian Kyle (West) and Aberdeen Ladies stalwart Sheena Wood (Northern).
Donna Jackson (West) and Buckpool's Meg Seivwright (Highland) halved their singles.
It must be the North-east air that inspires the Scots Vets. The 2009 victory was achieved at Cruden Bay!

SPRING MEETING OVER EAST KILBRIDE -- HARD TO TAME THE COURSE AND THE WIND !!

It was great to have 82 ladies testing their early season skills at East Kilbride on a dry but very windy day. The conditions contrived to lengthen some holes on an already long course !!

However some Vets deserve praise for managing to almost tame the course.
In particular, Dorothy Horsefield (Crail)  was the overall winner with an excellent nett 73, with runner-up Lilias Snodgrass (Ranfurly Castle) achieving a nett 75 (bih), and Sara Scott (Troon Ladies) was 1st in the Bronze Division with a nett 78.

Lilias Snodgrass (Net 75) also was the Super Vet winner  with Lana MacDonald (Hilton Park) one shot behind. with a net 76.  The best gross score of the day was achieved by Liz Stewart (Greenburn) with 79.

Despite the difficult conditions, everyone seemed to come off the course with a smile – or was it just relief !!
However we look forward to having a big field for our Summer Meeting at Ralston. Thanks go to Marion Stewart and Anne Dunn for their work throughout the day.
