Four years after a victory in the 2009 Strokeplay Championship at Kinross, Fiona Hunter (Southerness) won the Scottish Ladies’ Senior Matchplay Championship with a 2 and 1 win against Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Mntrose) in the final at West Linton.
Following a 19th hole win over Kathleen Webster (Ladybank) in the morning semi-final, Hunter took charge in the 18-hole final by winning the first two holes and she remained two up at the turn.
But Sutherland wasn’t going to give in easily. She reduced the deficit thanks to a great birdie at the long 15th and was still just one down with two to play.
Hunter then reduced one of shots of the day at the long par three penultimate hole. She found the green with her drive and two putts secured the 2 and 1 victory.
“I’m thrilled to bits to complete the double,” said Hunter, who started her career in Scottish girls’ events playing out of Dumfries and Galloway and then moved to Dundas Parks and Baberton before returning south.
“I’ve played for Scotland at senior level in European Championships and a real highlight was helping Scotland win the Senior Home Internationals at Newport a few years ago.
“The final was very tough. I made a good start but got a little nervous towards the end.”
In the semi-finals, Sutherland ended the hopes of another Ladybank player with a one hole victory over Lorna Bennett.
In the Nett Championship West Vets -- Lorraine Campbell (Cardross) was victorious over Fiona Cameron (Cowglen) the match going all the way to the 18th.
