Curtis Cup Poster Arrives in Golf Clubs

The countdown has started with a vengeance towards the June 8-10 staging of the 37th Curtis Cup encounter at The Nairn Golf Club, – a biennial, eight-a-side three-day match between the best female amateur golfers in Great Britain & Ireland and their counterparts from the United States. GB & I last won the trophy at Killarney, Ireland in 1996 but last summer’s Astor Trophy success at Fairhaven GC, Lancashire, where skipper Tegwen Matthews’ team of five beat New Zealand, Canada, Australia and South Africa to win the once-every-four-years tournament, has raised hopes that the tide may turn in this year’s Curtis Cup match at Nairn

DEATH OF MOIRA THOMSON (61) SHOCKS SCOTTISH GOLF

It is with huge regret that I report the death of Moira Thomson (nee Dewar) at the young age of 61.
She died this morning (19th November) at the Western General Hospital. I am sure all who read this will be as shocked as I am at the speed in which her illness took her.   It has been only 13 weeks since her diagnosis, and she fought a courageous battle to the end.
Moira won the Scottish Girls Championship at Dalmahoy in 1968.   Starting out as a County player for Midlothian, and then a stalwart of the East Lothian County team, she really came into her own on reaching the age for seniors golf, and was a regular Scottish Senior International player for over 10 years.
She worked very hard on her golf in these latter years, and gained the respect of her international colleagues as a strong match player. She thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie of senior golf and her friends at Gullane will miss her in their regular Saturday game.
Our heartfelt sympathies go to her husband Alastair, her daughter Claire and son Andrew, her sister Anne and their families.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

COWGLEN GC – 3RD NOVEMBER, 2011

Captain Fiona Roger welcomed 35 members to the 43^rd Annual General Meeting of the West Vets AGM at Cowglen Golf Club.

APOLOGIES were received from 39 members.

MINUTES of 2010 AGM. The adoption was proposed by Ann Dunn and seconded by Helen Faulds.

MATTERS ARISING. None

FINANCIAL REPORT. Sheila Shaw thanked Jan Macnab for auditing the accounts and Fiona Roger for taking care of the sale of the sweaters.

Total income for the year was £3151 and expenditure was £3167 leaving a deficit, of £16.

Sheila reported that bank interest was considerably reduced and in fact has now disappeared completely. Trophy insurance costs show a sizeable increase and this is being looked at seriously before the annual renewal in May.

The financial report was approved having been proposed by Janette Stewart and seconded by Ann Prentice.

SECRETARY'S REPORT. The secretary announced that the membership currently stood at 178 (there having been 2 resignations prior to the AGM. There are 44 ladies on the waiting list.

CAPTAIN'S REPORT. The Captain began by saying how much she had enjoyed her first year in office. The weather for the year had not been spectacular but the meetings had all been successfully completed and Prestwick St Cuthbert's at the Spring meeting had been particularly enjoyed by all. The numbers entering the meetings had been very high and extra tee times had had to be arranged for two of the meetings.

The results of the matches were as follows:

Midlands v West – Played at Alloa and win 4-3 by West

East v West singles – Played at Gullane and halved

West v East Foursomes – Played at Troon and won 3.5 – 1.5 by West

CHAMPIONSHIP - This was held as usual at Renfrew GC and was won by Pat Hutton with the runner up being Jennifer Mack. The Bronze championship was won by May McGhee with Mary Irving being the runner up. Thanks were extended to Renfrew for granting courtesy of the course again.

The Captain then congratulated the many West Vets who had played in competitions in Scotland and elsewhere throughout the year and who had, in many cases, been very successful.

BLAIRGOWRIE REPORT The captain reported that June Irons was second in the Patrick Rose Bowl and Sheilagh Osborne was 5^th. The Buchanan Cup was won by June Irons with Sheilagh Osborne runner up. The Greensomes was won yet again by Helen Faulds and Carol Fell who retained the Tony Moffat Trophy for the best scratch score and the Beddows Quaich for the 1^st handicap

NEXT YEARS COMPETITIONS :-

Jamboree - The Hirsel GC Coldstream from 7^th to 9^th August, 2012

Irish match - Hilton Temple Patrick GC Belfast from 14^th to 16^th April, 2012

Championship - Blairgowrie from 16^th to 18^th September, 2012

The President, Jean Thomas, was absent due to illness and Sally Coster (Vice President) chaired the meeting. Pam Williamson handed over captaincy of the Scottish Vets to Helen Faulds who announced that her Vice Captain will be Noreen Fenton (East)

The Championship draw has now been changed to a rolling draw rather than an ad hoc annual draw. It was agreed that the use of distance measuring devices will be allowed at Blairgowrie from 2012.

SCOTTISH VETS MATCH REPORTS.

Irish Match. May Hughes reported that Craigielaw was the venue for the Irish match contesting the Mary McKenna Trophy. The team consisted of Elaine Allison, Heather Anderson, Allison Bartlett, Lorna Bennett, May Hughes, Anne Ryan, Mary Smith and Moira Thomson. The match was played in excellent weather and the Irish won by the narrow margin of 6.5 to 5.5

JAMBOREE. Alex Glennie reported that this was held at Wellingborough GC from 10^th to 12^th August. It was an interesting course with a very testing final hole! The results of the matches were:-

Scotland v England midlands - 6 -3 to Scotland

Scotland v England south – 8.5 – 0.5 to England south

Scotland v England north - match halved

The Miller Trophy was won by England South

HOME INTERNATIONALS. In appalling weather the Scottish team lost to both Ireland and England and beat Wales to finish third overall. Next year they will be held at Elie and a good turn out is hoped for.

ELECTION OF OFFICE BEARERS. The Captain thanked Helen Faulds and Jinty Halley who will both be stepping down. Sheila Shaw and Ruth Henderson will remain as Treasurer and Secretary respectively for a further year. Two new committee members were proposed by Captain Fiona:-

Helen Burnett and Morag Key. These ladies were seconded by Sheilagh Osborne and will serve for a period of 2 years.

AOCB.

The captain proposed that the use of distance measuring devices be allowed in all West competitions from 2012 and this was approved.

Cathy Morton suggested that the West division might consider underwriting the cost of the Trophy insurance ourselves by depositing money each year into an account to be used for the purpose. It was agreed that the committee will look into this.

It was agreed that all meetings from 2012 will be pre-ballotted.

Carol fell was presented with a gift in appreciation of all her work on the web site.

The captain reported that a special trophy would be given to Sally Coster to mark her hole in one at the Spring meeting at Prestwick St Cuthberts.

After the presentation of the prizes Jennifer Mack proposed a vote of thanks.

CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Another year gone in the blink of an eye! I can honestly say that I have enjoyed my first year of captaincy of the West Vets, and along with it, another year of fun in the wider circle of Scottish vet’s golfing circles.
I think the fun and camaraderie within the vets is something special.
The golf may not be quite as consistent as it once was, but we are still out there trying as hard as we ever did!

As in most of the Vet’s Divisions in Scotland we have a very full membership and turnouts for competitions are high. Our membership is full with 180 members and a considerable waiting list. Long may that continue. Perhaps not for the people well down the waiting list but certainly to be in such a healthy position is great.

The past season has not produced a whole lot of summer weather but if you recall our Spring Meeting at Prestwick St Cuthbert in April was a magnificent day and we had 87 enthusiastic ladies take part. There wee 7 ladies below the CSS for the day in Division 1 and 4 in Division 2. A great display of golf! Janette Stewart (Kilmarnock Barassie) was our winner with a brilliant net 66. Division 2 winner and super vet was May McGhee with a net 65.

The summer Meeting was played at Whitecraigs in weather that improved as the morning went on. This was also our qualifier for the West Division Championship. 68 people participated and scoring reflected the not so good conditions. The CSS was 75 (RO). The winner was Enid Young with a nett 77. Whitecraigs member Sandra Carruthers was Division 2 winner and Super Vet with a net 73, Well done Sandra – the best net score of the day! 8 players with the best scratch scores qualified for the Championship – more about that later.

There was a poor turnout for the Autumn Meeting at Cardross. Perhaps the awful weather leading up to it, and the fact that it was a difficult course and even more difficult with the conditions underfoot. The day did in fact turn out to be extremely good overhead but sadly we had only 33 ladies turn up.
We had 2 people who obviously didn’t find it too difficult! The CSS was 77 and Joanna Scott (Cathkin Braes) returned a wonderful score of GROSS 78-6:72 pipping Suzanne Cadden (Cardross) also GROSS 78-5:73. Well done to both of them. Division 2 was won by Jane Thomson (Whitecraigs)

Matches:
All three matches this year were played in a very friendly but competitive manner and I am delighted to report a halved match against the East in the Elise Duncan Trophy at Gullane – scratch singles for the single handicapers.

A win (4-3) against the Midlands for the Mid West Trophy at Alloa – scratch singles for 10+ handicaps.

And a win (3.5-1.5) against the East in the Friendship Trophy at Troon – scratch foursomes for handicaps 10+.

May I minute my thanks to Emma Wilson, Midlands Captain and Noreen Fenton, East Captain for arranging two such enjoyable days away, and to say how much we enjoyed hosting the East foursomes team at Troon.

The Championship:
The 2011 West Division Championship was played again this year at Renfrew Golf Club. The 8 best scratch scores from the Summer Meeting went forward to the match play stages and the best 4 scratch scores in the Bronze contested the Bronze Championship.
We appreciate Renfrew allowing us the courtesy of the course – 10 tee tmes in all over two days.
A challenging course and good to start of the championship on a windless day.
Congratulations to all those who qualified for the match play stages.
Day 1 saw Alex Glennie, Jennifer Mack, May Hughes and Janette McCartney progress to the semi finals at the expense of Lorraine Campbell, May Hughes, Enid Young and Anna Telfer.
The semi finals and finals were played on day 2 under blue skies and warm sunshine.
Jennifer beat Alex at the 17th in a closely contested match.
The other semi final was a game of two halves between Pat and Janette. Janette took a commanding lead but Pat played her way back into the match and was victorious at the 18th.
The final was contested between Pat and Jennifer and in the end Pat was the worthy winner and Vets Champion for 2011.
The Bronze finalists were Mary Irving and May McGhee at the expense of Maureen Rennie and Anna MacDougall. The final was very competitive and closely fought with May McGhee coming out on top as Bronze Champion 2011.

Can I say how honoured I am to captain a Vet’s Division that has so many of its members committed to so many areas of Golf – administration, captaincy, team members, club champions and participants in so many of the Vet competitions not only in this country but also abroad. If I have omitted anyone in the following list, please forgive me.

Seven Vets played in the Scottish Championships at Machrihanish. I think they all wish the had decided not to – the weather was seriously horrendous.

17 West Division vets took part in the Scottish Seniors at Portpatrick Dunskey. There were 77 competed altogether. Alex Glennie became Scottish Stroke play Champion – many congratulations Alex. Alex, Pat Hutton, Janice Paterson and May Hughes all qualified for the match play stages, Jennifer Mack, missing out in a play off, for the last match play place. Pat unfortunately lost in the first round. May in the quarter finals but both Alex and Janice reached the semis Janice only losing to the eventual winner, Noreen Fenton at the 18th. Carol Fell qualified for the new handicap match play but unfortunately lost in the first round.

The West vets were represented at the British Seniors in Ireland by Janice Paterson. Jennifer Mack and Helen Faulds had to withdraw as they were storm bound and unable to cross to Ireland on the ferry!

Janice and Jennifer went to the Portugeuse Seniors. Janice won the 6-12 handicap category.

Janice and Suzanne Cadden participated at the Spanish Seniors.

Ayrshire County Captain Alex Glennie took her county team to the County Finals

Milngavie Greenlees team, led by Anna Telfer won the Greenlees Trophy for the 3rd year in a row.

I do know that several vets have won their club championships. I apologise for not being able to name them. I couldn’t find the list which I know Carol put on the web.

I would like to finish my report by thanking all my committee for their support throughout the season and to all the members of the Division who have supported all the year’s competitions. I look forward to as many of you being able to be at next season’s competitions and hope that we have some slightly better summer months.

BLAIRGOWRIE REPORT 2011

120 Ladies from all over Scotland were at Blairgowrie for the annual vet’s meeting. The Championship played on the Landsdowne course features the 8 Divisional champions from all over Scotland, in a knockout competition and PAT HUTTON our West Division champion lost in the quarter final to Linda Dyball from Midlands. The East Champion, NOREEN FENTON, followed up her title of SCOTTISH SENIORS CHAMPION earlier in the season at PORTPATRICK DUNSKEY by becoming SCOTTISH VETS CHAMPION at Blairgowrie.

West division was well represented in the prize list for the other competitions over the two days.
Played on the Monday, JUNE IRONS was second in the Patrick Rose Bowl – medal round played over Rosemount- with a net 74 and SHEILAGH ORBORNE was 5th with a net 76. The Buchanan Cup, for the best net score for the ladies in the more senior age group was won by JUNE IRONS with SHEILAGH ORSBORNE runner up.

The Greensomes was played on Tuesday and the West had 13 couples participating. Carol Fell and Helen Faulds retained the Tony Moffat Trophy for the best scratch score of 78 and the Beddows Quaich for 1sr handicap (78-7:71)

Well done to all the prizewinners.

Helen and I attended the committee meeting on Sunday, along with the other captains and secretaries and then the AGM, well supported, was held on the Monday night. Both meetings past with any great dramas.

In the absence of President Jean Thomas due to illness Sally Coster in her role as Vice President chaired the AGM.

Correspondence was received from Team members who played in the Irish and Jamboree matches saying that they felt it was a privilege to play for the vets and appreciated the continued support from the Association and that they were very aware of costs involved although they do contribute quite a lot of expenses themselves.

Finances seems to be holding their own. Sheila has already mentioned the £1 increase payable by the Divisions.

Pam Williamson gave a very comprehensive report on the 2011 Jamboree held at Wellingborough in August. She was disappointed that the Miller Stirling Cup wasn’t retained but the team gave of their best. One win, one draw and a loss.
Pam then handed over the Scottish Vet’s captaincy to Helen Faulds and wished her well in her time of office. Helen then announced that her vice captain would be Noreen Fenton from the East.

The 2012 Jamboree will be hosted by Scotland at The Hirshel Golf Club, Coldstream from 7th to 9th August.

The Irish match will be in Ireland at Hilton Temple Patrick Golf Club from 14th to 16th April 2012.

It has been agreed that the Scottish team have a nice new uniform which is in the hands of Helen.

At the request of Helen, The Championship draw has been changed to a rolling draw rather than divisions drawn out of a hat. There are 8 Division and there will now be a set draw which will cover seven years.

As always a huge thanks must go to the Scottish Vet’s Secretary Jean Lambert and her team for a very well organised few days of competition as well as the meetings she has to prepare for. It is thoroughly enjoyed by all those taking part.
Dates for next year’s Blairgowrie Meeting will be 16th to 18th September.
The meeting this year has passed the use of Distance Measuring Devices for Blairgowrie 2012.

If you wish to go to Blairgowrie next year please make sure that your form is with Ruth by the Spring Meeting next year. Entry is subject to a set number of couples from each Division determined by the Divisional Membership. Should we have to many apply from the West we will need to ballot for places.

Mary McKenna Trophy -- Report by May Hughes

Craigielaw was the venue for the annual friendly tussle with Ireland for the Mary McKenna Trophy. The Scots team of Elaine Allison, Heather Anderson, Allison Bartlett, Lorna Bennett, May Hughes, Anne Ryan, Mary Smith and Moira Thomson, were eagerly awaiting the contest to get their revenge for the defeat last year at Portmarnock.

April in Scotland can on occasions be cold and wet but in this instance the sun shone from dawn to dusk leaving several vets short on sun cream.

In the fourballs on day one the Scots did not get off to the best of starts losing the first session 3.5 to 0.5, with Mary Smith and Alison Bartlett to only pair to put a half point on the board. This left Captain Pam Williamson and Vice Captain Helen Faulds searching for inspirational words to inspire a comeback. The Scots now needed 6 points from the 8 singles to regain the trophy.

However in true Scottish underdog style the team made a valiant effort to turn the match around. From the word go the Scots were out of starting blocks at full pelt and at the ninth the Irish captain Roma English must have had some niggling doubts of cashing in on their overnight lead. All but one game at the turn was in Scotland’s favour.

Moira Thomson put the first vital point on the board and a hole in one from Lorna Bennett helped add a second. Elaine Allison, Alison Bartlett and Anne Ryan posted 3 more wins and the Irish were beginning to feel heat. With 5 singles on the board only one more point was required, which after the disaster on day one was a welcome position.

May Hughes was all square at 15 but lost on 17 to Sheena McElroy. Mary Smith unfortunately lost on the last which left Heather Anderson needing a point for the victory. Sadly however a closing birdie from Ireland’s Helen Jones secured the vital point for the visitors and the Mary McKenna Trophy sailed west for another year.

The captain and her right hand woman were exhausted after one of the tightest games ever and although disappointed to lose, were very proud at just failing at the final hurdle. Next year at Temple Patrick in Belfast we look forward to fight another day.

Senior Ladies Home Internationals at Tramore – by Helen Faulds

Thanks to Past Vets Captain Helen Faulds who as Captain led the team representing Scotland at the Senior Ladies Home Internationals at Tramore Golf Club recently and has sent this report of their time there.

Senior Ladies Home Internationals from Tramore G C in County Waterford, Southern Ireland.
The weather as you probably read was terrible—mist and fog causing numerous suspensions in play and torrential rain on the last day. I think we were the only part of the whole world not basking in sunshine last week. In fact it was glorious sunshine just 10 miles away.
The Scottish team lost narrowly to Ireland on the first day, were thumped by England on day 2 and beat Wales on day 3 to finish in 3rd place. I thought the girls showed a lot of grit and determination in poor weather conditions and team spirit was always good.
Tramore GC could not have done more for us. They had 60 volunteers who either caddied, ball spotted or acted as scorers with each game. The club welcomed us with open arms –even giving each player and captain a lovely Waterford crystal memento of the occasion. I think we all left Ireland with very special memories.

A truly memorable occasion for Helen and her Team! Next year the venue for the Senior Ladies is at Elie, we wish them luck and good weather – and hopefully some of us will make the journey through to Fife to support the team.

England retained the title in the Senior Ladies’ Home Internationals on a very wet afternoon at Tramore Golf Club in Ireland. But what an exciting finish it was to the weather-hit three-day programme.
After England and Ireland had completed Day 2 wins this morning over Scotland and Wales respectively, it meant that the England v Ireland match between the only two teams with 100 per cent winning records would be the title decider.
It went right down to the wire before England prevailed 4-3 with the last putt on the last green in the last match to finish.
Wales started well in the match for third place against Scotland. Christine Harries won by 5 and 4 against Heather Anderson in the lead-off singles, having been one up at the turn before adding to that with unanswered successes at the 10th, 12th, 13th and 14th.
But Lorna Bennett chalked up an outstanding win for Scotland by beating Welsh ace Vicki Thomas by the comprehensive margin of 6 and 5. Lorna was five up after seven holes and never allowed her opponent a chance to get back into the match.
Scotland went 2-1 ahead when Karen Ballantyne beat Karen Weatherley by 5 and 4 after winning three of the first four holes and still leading by two at the turn. Ballantyne quickened to win the 11th, 13th and 14th.
Scotland advanced to 3-1 with a one-hole victory by Mary Smith over Denise Richards who was twice two up on the outward half. Smith played the inward nine impeccably. She won the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 17th and 18th
Wales got a second point on the board when Jane Rees beat Alex Glennie by 2 and 1 after winning four of the first six holes. Glennie had a good spell approaching the turn, winning the eighth, ninth and 10th but Rees pulled away again by winning the 11th and 13th.
Elaine Allison, Scotland’s most successful player of the week, got the clinching fourth point by beating Janet Doleman 3 and 2. Allison went two up at the 10th and added successes at the 13th and 16th for victory.
The last match to finish was halved between Wales’ Ann Lewis and Scotland’s May Hughes. Lewis had looked set for victory when she won the 11th and 12th to go three up but Hughes finished strongly to salvage half a point. She won the 13th, 14th and 16th to square the match and the last two holes were halved.

It’s an England versus Ireland title decider in this afternoon’s seven-singles finale to the 9th Senior Women’s Home Internationals at Tramore Golf Club, Ireland. Both teams have won twice this week.
Defending champions England, who beat Wales 8-0 on Day 1, completed a 7-1 victory over Scotland this morning after sea mist forced a suspension of play yesterday afternoon.
Ireland, who have never won the over-50s team championship, followed up their 5-3 win over Ireland by completing a 5-3 win over Wales this morning.
Senior Ladies British champion Felicity Christine, playing No 1 for England in the singles, beat Scotland’s Heather Anderson by 5 and 4. When the match resumed at the 13th, Christine was four up, having been six up at the turn.
Anderson, who had scored her first success of the match at the 12th, also won the 13th to cut her deficit to four but the English player won the 14th to finish the match.
England went into a 5-0 lead overall when Caroline Marron beat Mary Smith by one hole. Marron was two up when play resumed this morning at the 14th.
Smith won the 14th to be only one down but Marron regained a two-hole lead by taking the 16th. The Scot was not finished yet, however. She won the 17th to be one down with one to play. The last hole was halved.
Last year’s Senior Ladies British champion at West Kilbride, Bev New made it 6-0 for England when she beat Karen Ballantyne 3 and 2. This match resumed at the 13th with New three up. The 11th and 12th had been halved and the sequence was continued this morning with the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th beind halved, leaving New the winner by 3 and 2.
Janet Melville, former Ladies British open amateur champion, made it 7-0 for England with a hard-fought, one-hole win over Lorna Bennett. This match resumed all square at the 12th, the 10th and 11th holes being halved before the suspension of play.
The 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th were halved this morning before Melville ended the stalemate by winning the 17th to be one up with one to play. A half was all she needed at the 18th – and she got it.
Scotland’s Elaine Allison prevented England scoring an 8-0 win for the second day in a row. When her match against Rozalyn Adams resumed at the the 13th, the Scot was two up and she promptly went three up by winning the 13th.
Adams got it back to two down by winning the 16th but she had run out of holes and a half at the 17th ended the match in Allison’s favourite by 2 and 1.

Sea mist forced the suspension of play just after 4pm on Day 2 of the Senior Women's Home Internationals at Tramore Golf Club in southeast Ireland.
Play will restart at 9.15am on Thursday from the positions the players are at in their singles matches.
The foursomes will be dropped from the Day 3 programme which will be truncated to seven singles ties between England v Ireland and Wales v Scotland.
When play was halted today, this was the position in all the singles ties:

Tournament Director Gillian Roy reports from Tramore Golf Club that it is another foggy, drizzly day in southeast Ireland.
They should have played them in Scotland where ANOTHER summer-like day is forecast! In fact they will be played in Scotland next year.
Make a note of the date: October 2 to 4 at Elie and Earlsferry Golf Club in Fife.
News from the Scotland camp - they played 8-0 winners England - is that Elaine Allison (Stirling), who had a good win in the singles against Ireland, has taken the place of Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) in this morning's first foursome off the tee.
Alex has pulled out due to illness.
Rain forecast for the last day of the SWHI at Tranmore.

In the Ireland v Scotland singles, Sheena McElroy won the lead-off tie for Ireland, beating Heather Anderson 3 and 2.
McElroy won three of the first four holes and was two up at the turn. The first three holes of the inward half were halved before the Irish player went three up at the 13th. Three halves ended the match in her favour.
Lorna Bennett put Scotland’s first singles point on the board by beating Carol Wickham 5 and 4. Lorna established an edge on the outward half, standing two up after seven, having won the first, second, fourth and seventh against losses at the third and sixth. Three halved holes from the eighth to the 10th were followed by Bennett surging clear for victory.
The Scot went three up at the 11th and fourth up at the 12th before finishing off the tie by winning the 14th.
Scotland’s Elaine Allison made it 2-2 in the singles by beating Pauline Walsh 3 and 2. Alison dominated the outward half, not losing a hole and winning the third, fourth, sixth, eighth and ninth to be five up at the turn.
Walsh made a strong comeback to win the 10th and 12th, followed by the 14th and 15th after Allison had regained a four-hole lead at the 13th. Allison stopped the rot by winning the 16th for victory.
Ireland’s Pat Doran was a 9 and 7 winner over Alex Glennie who did not win a hole. Doran won seven and halved the other two on her way to a seven-hole lead at the turn. The Irish player finished the match by winning the 10th and 11th.
Mary Smith carried Scotland’s hopes of salvaging a draw if she could overturn a two-hole deficit at the turn against Helen Jones, one of Ireland’s top players - easier said than done. Jones doubled her lead by winning the 10th and 12th.but then Smith made a late charge. She won the 13th, 15th and 16th to slash her opponent’s lead to only one hole but halves at the 17th and 18th in pars saw Jones home by one hole.

West Vets at Blairgowrie --- West Vets do well and Helen Faulds is the Scottish Vets Captain

Blairgowrie Golf Club was a very busy place on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of this week as 120 Vets from all over Scotland arrived to play in their annual competitions. Weather was kind to us again this year and the courses were in very good condition.

The Championship played on the Lansdowne Course featured the divisional champions in a knockout competition and Pat Hutton, our West Vets Champion, lost in the to Linda Dyball (Midlands) in the quarter finals
Noreen Fenton from the East won won the Scroggie Cup by winning the Championship.

In the Medal round on Rosemount on Monday the winner of the Rosebowl was Heather Anderson (Midlands) 76 (4) -72. She also won the Lyon Picture for the best scratch 78.

West Vet June Irons was runner up with a 89 (15) -74 and was awarded the Smith Medal and West Vet Sheilagh Osborne won 4th prize with a net 76 playing off a handicap of 15. The Buchannan Cup (for the best Nett Score for ladies in a more senior age group) was also presented to June Irons with Sheilagh Osborne being runner up in that group.

The Greensomes Competition was played over the Lansdowne Course on Tuesday and West had 13 couples playing.
Carol Fell and Helen Faulds retained the Tony Moffat Memorial Trophy for the best Scratch Score of 78 (3 over the SSS OF 75) and the Beddows Quaich for 1st handicap 78-7-71.

Dunbar's Noreen Fenton, is the new Scottish Veteran Ladies Golf Association champion. Having qualified as winner of the East vets' title, Noreen beat the North champion, over-50s "rookie" Linda Urquhart (Banchory), by 2 and 1 in this afternoon's final over the Lansdowne course, Blairgowrie.
In this morning's semi-finals, Linda Urquhart beat Pitreavie's Linda Dyball (Midland) by 5 and 3 and Noreen Fenton beat Val McKean (Borders) by 4 and 2.
Noreen who won the double this year in now the Scottish Seniors Champion and the Scottish Vets Champion for 2011. What a fantastic achievement.

4 Scots make the Cut at the British Seniors in Belfast

Former women’s world amateur champion Maria de Orueta from Madrid , making her debut in the championship, leads the Senior Ladies British open amateur championship with one round to go at Belvoir Park Golf Club, Belfast.
The 50-year-old, who was 26 when she won the individual title at the women’s world championship (Espirito Santo Trophy) in Venezuela, has had rounds of 78 and 74 for a 36-hole tally of eight-over-par 152 on a day when the wind dropped, the rain was not so heavy or frequent – yet there was no significant improvement in the general standard of scoring.
The CSS was 75 (par is 72), the same as for the first round although it was "Reduction Only" on Tuesday but not so today.
A total of 41 players qualified for the final round with aggregates of 168 or better.
Leading Scot to qualify for the last round was Mary Smith from Tain.
Unfortunately West Vet Janice Paterson had 3 disaster holes today (12 shots dropped) to ruin her score and did not qualify for the last round.

Jane Rees leader after Stormy First Day at Belvoir Park

London-based Welsh international Jane Rees is the first-round leader by two shots with a three-over-par 75 at the end of an opening day of high winds and periodic rain for the Senior Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship at the woodland course of Belvoir Park Golf Club in the southern suburbs of Belfast.

Eighty-eight players endured the day’s weather – described as “brutal” at times by some – and there was not a single No Return.
Best Scot at present is Heather Anderson (Blairgowrie) with an 81 followed closely by Pamela Williamson (Baberton) and Mary Smith from Tain on 82.
West vet Janice Paterson went out much later in the day, and she unfortunately hit the more severe weather and had an 91.

A truly international field will be assembling at Belvoir Park with thirteen countries represented.
The Belvoir Park Golf Club course is sited in 136 acres of mature woodland, but only two miles from Belfast ’s City Centre.
Harry S Colt was the course designer in the 1920s and there are those who rate Belvoir Park as one of the best inland courses, not only in Ireland but further afield.
The 54-hole championship tees off on Tuesday and there will be a cut to the leading 40 and ties after Wednesday’s second round for the final 18 holes on Thursday. In the event of a tie for first place after the third round, there will be a sudden-death play-off.
I believe the only Scots that are there are Janice Paterson (Drumpellier), Pam Williamson, Barbara Biggart, Maureen Richmond, Heather Anderson, Lorna Bennett, Kathleen Sutherland and the sisters from Tain, Mary Smith and Anne Ryan.

The cancellation of the Troon to Belfast ferry today because of the abnormal weather conditions cost three Scots - Noreen Fenton (Dunbar), Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) and Jennifer Mack (Haggs Castle) - their places in the Senior British women's open amateur golf championship which tees off at Belvoir Park Golf Club, Belfast tomorrow
Most of nine other Scots in the international field for the over-50s' tournament over 54 holes were possibly "saved" from a similar fate because they were competing at Greenore GC, Co Louth in the Irish senior women's open stroke-play championship which finished on Friday and drove up to the Belfast venue over the weekend.
Royal Dornoch's Alison Barlett finished joint second in the Irish event, her best ever performance on the international stage, and her confidence will be sky high.
Other Scots in the field are Pamela Williamson (Baberton), Mary Smith (Tain), Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose), Barbara Biggart (North Berwick), Janice Paterson (Drumpellier), Lorna Bennett (Ladybank), Anne Ryan (Tain) and Heather Anderson (Blairgowrie).
Cruden Bay's Lynne Terry had to withdraw after a mishap while engaged in that sometimes dangerous past time - gardening! She fell awkardly in her garden and had to have several stitches inserted in a nasty leg wound.
The tournament is run by the Ladies Golf Union whose Head of Golf Operations Susan Simpson said:
"I sympathise with the Scots who have not made it to Belfast but the people I really feel sorry for are the Belvoir Park Golf Club greenstaff.
"They had this woodland course looking immaculate at the weekend. Then the winds arrived and undid all their good work. Trees have been blown over, branches have blown down, and there are leaves all over the place. The greenkeepers have been hard at it all day repairing the damage."

Many thanks to webmaster Carol who beat me to it recording the result and giving you all a report on the Autumn Meeting held at Cardross on Thursday! I had a commitment straight from Cardross and by the time I went to my computer Friday morning the report was there for me to read! How lucky were we with the weather? The day got better and better as the hours went by and the threatening cloud at 9.30 drifted away leaving everyone to have a rain free round!

Very well done to both Joanna Scott and Suzanne Cadden for recording such good scores on a course which played very long after such heavy rain had battered it overnight - on top of all the other rain that has fallen recently. Congratulations to Joanna who won the May Craddock Trophy for the best net score of the day.

I can't believe that we are already well into September and another golf season is almost complete. May I say thank you to all those who were able to support our competitions this year and I hope you enjoyed the courses you played on each occasion. We are very lucky to be given

courtesy of all the courses we play and we are indebted to the courses concerned, for their welcome and support. It is becoming more and more difficult for courses to give up tee time for nothing, as we all know, and I just hope everyone appreciates that in future years this may not be so readily available.

The SLVGA annual three days of golf and AGM take place from September 18th-20th at Blairgowrie. All the Scottish Divisional winners will play match play to determine the SVLGA Champion for 2011. We wish Pat Hutton (Lanark), our West Division Champion, good luck for a successful two days. There are several other West Division Vets going to play in other competitions taking place and we wish them all a successful and fun two days.

Cardross Home Player Suzanne Cadden had a terrific round over a rather long and damp course today in the Autumn Meeting. Despite her ball ending up stuck up a tree at the 6th hole Suzanne managed to card a very creditable Gross 78 -- 1 over the CSS of the day.
Joanna Scott from Cathkin Braes had 3 birdies in her outward half of 36 and she too had a gross 78. Although her Scratch round was beaten by the inward half Joanna won the top Handicap prize with a net 72 (5 under the CSS) and wins the May Craddock Trophy

If, like me, you are wondering why Scotland are not defending the European senior women's team championship in Bulgaria this week, Dr Sheila Hartley, CEO of the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association, has the explanation which, is a very reasonable one, once the facts are explained.

WHY SCOTLAND ARE NOT DEFENDING SENIOR WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP IN

BULGARIA THIS WEEK

In 2009 the European Golf Association conducted a survey of its members into, among other things, the frequency (holding them in alternate years) of the ladies’ and men’s and senior men’s and senior ladies’ team championships. There were 33 responses and the majority were in favour of holding these championships every two years.
The main driver for this was economic. It costs a fortune to host one of these events (the SLGA’s budget for the European girls’ at Murcar was £65,000) and a small fortune to participate (in the region of £10-15k each).
The EGA Championship Committee recommended that a biennial frequency be introduced and this was endorsed by the EGA Executive Committee at its meeting in December 2009 where it was decided that from January 2011 the Men’s and Ladies’ Team Championships would be held biennially in odd years with the seniors in even years.
Following the 2010 Senior Team Championships the team captains, with no authority from their governing bodies, wrote a letter to the EGA petitioning for the Senior Team Championships to be held annually.
I must tell you that Pam Williamson did not sign the letter from the captains of the ladies’ teams.
The letter was discussed at the EGA Championship Committee in October 2010 and referred to the EGA Executive Committee for decision.
At the meeting of the EGA Executive Committee in October 2010 the decision taken in December 2009 was reversed.
The Home Nations, England, Ireland and Scotland (Wales does not participate in senior team championships), discussed the matter and wrote to the EGA requesting that the original decision stand. However the EGA was not for changing its mind again.
Given that the economic circumstances that led to the original decision to hold the Championships biennially still prevail the Home Nations agreed that we will only participate in the Senior Team Championships in alternate years which is why England, Ireland and Scotland are not in Bulgaria or in Portugal where the Senior Men’s Championship is being held.

Not our finest hour!
Not only did Scotland fail to beat the South, they lost in spectacular form. After losing all the foursomes, they lost all the singles bar one which thankfully they halved. 8 1/2 to 1/2. Of course several of the games were very tight, three going to the eighteenth hole but in itself, it does not bode well for the Home International team in October, the selection for which is pending. Captain Pamela Williamson (Baberton) and Vice-captain Helen Faulds are naturally very disappointed considering the promise of the early games. They will no doubt be turning over many questions in their minds as to what went wrong.

Scottish Vets Draw with the North on Day 2

Scotland have not lost a match in the Jamboree. Today they drew with the North of England. Considering the rampage they went on yesterday to win all but one of their singles, they were more than likely a little disappointed with today's result. They won the morning foursomes by two games to one but unfortunately were unable to cash in on yesterday's magic touch to repeat singles success. They only managed to win two of the singles, halving one and losing two. Sum total - a draw.

Those watching the weather forecast at home will have noticed that this area of England was spared Scotland's drenching. With the South being tomorrow's opponents, it is cheering that they, the South, lost to the Midlands, 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 which was the margin of Scotland's success yesterday. But experienced data collectors in this particular match will know there can only ever be one reliable method of predicting a result and that is not to predict at all. The only sure way to retaining the MIller-Stirling is to go out there all guns blazing and win it. The only division who cannot win outright is North but a win by them would put an end to the Midlands' aspirations. Although Scotland leads the table after Day 2, any of the others apart from the North could win.

Scottish Vets Win on Day One of the Miller-Stirling Salver

Scotland made the very best possible start to their defence of the Miller-Stirling Salver when their Vets team produced a magnificent turnaround on Day One. They converted a negative situation from the morning foursomes to a great thumping win after the singles in the afternoon. In the morning, in relatively good conditions (unlike at home) despite a troublesome wind, and playing against the strong Midlands side, they went down 2/1 in the foursomes. Alex Glennie and May Hughes from the West Division, brought in the winning point against Anne Booth and Carol Gibbs - at least one former Curtis Cup player there (webmaster not having details at hand and memory getting worse as the years go by!) But lunch must have set the team up good style for a real tussle. They won all but one of the singles to win outright by 6 games to 3.

East Division's Karen Ballantyne, not having played in the foursomes, led the team out in the afternoon against the highly experienced Janet Melville, whose pedigree needs no embellishment. After a terrific battle, Karen saw off the opposition on the last hole.

Scotland plays North tomorrow.

The West Vets played their annual foursomes match against the East Vets at Troon Portland today. I am delighted to report that West had a good win and the Friendship Trophy returns to this side of the country! The course looked a perfect picture today with lots of sunshine and blue sky. A very strong wind made conditions tough for everyone - drivers at 2 of the short holes! Probably a 2 to 3 club wind but the plus side was a sea of gorgeous 'white horses' and no rain! We met around 10am for coffee and bacon rolls before setting off at 11. There were 5 matches, no strokes, and all five were extremely competitive but enjoyed by everyone. Several people were playing the course for the first time and they all enjoyed it thoroughly. Despite the difficult conditions they all would be happy to return on a future occasion. Following the match we had a lovely meal in the clubhouse and plenty of fun and laughter. A lovely way to spend a Monday! Thank you to all my team for agreeing to play today and well done to everyone.

East Vets retain Elise Duncan Trophy

What a magnificent day the West Vets had for our annual match against the East Vets at Gullane yesterday. The sun shone from beginning to end and the views from the course were spectacular. Thank you to Noreen Fenton (East Captain) and her committee for organising such a lovely day for us. We met around 2pm for coffee and shortbread and 9 singles matches teed off from 3pm .

The starter at Gullane was concerned when his sheet for the day said: 3pm Vets Match - 9 matches. I think he thought we were 'Vetinary Surgeons' or perhaps he had also thought we might be 'veterans'! Having watched the first 3 games tee off he quickly realised the standard of golf was high and he would not have to be concerned about the people following on the tee after us!

The matches were exciting and close, four of them going all the way to the 18th green! I had the nice job of following the games around, enjoying the sunshine and not having to do all the hard work! The match couldn't have been closer ending in a 4.5 draw and so the East, having won last year's encounter, retain the trophy until our next meeting, next year, in the West.

After the match, we had a very enjoyable meal together in the visitors clubhouse and it was fully 8.45pm before we all set off on journeys home. Our thanks go to both the staff in the main clubhouse and the staff in the visitors clubhouse for looking after us so well.

We look forward to next meeting in the West in 2012. Again many thanks to Noreen and also many thanks to my team who played their hearts out - we almost came back West with the trophy!

The Scottish Seniors Championship at Portpatrick is now a distant memory! I hope you have all read with interest the reports written by Carol Fell and looked at all the wonderful photographs taken by Carol, Claire Hargan (SLGA) and Jean MacIntyre. Not only did the photographs cover all the 5 days of golf competition and participants, but also wildlife, flowers and Portpatrick by day and by evening! We were so lucky with the weather. We had windy conditions, warm weather, cool weather but can you believe no rain! How lucky we were! Serious golf was played but we had a lot of fun and laughter 'apres golf'!

I would like, firstly, to congratulate Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) on winning the Scottish Stroke Play Championship with a two round total of 150 (76, 74) A wonderful achievement. Well done Alex!

Four West Vets, Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie), Pat Hutton (Lanark), Janice Paterson (Drumpellier) and May Hughes (Lanark) all qualified for the match play stages, with Jennifer Mack (Haggs Castle) unfortunately missing out in a play off for the last match play place.

A new Net Match Play competion was introduced this year and our Webmaster Carol qualified for the match play stages

I would like to say how nice it was to see so many of the West Vets performing so well and to congratulate them all on their achievements.

East Vet Webmaster Noreen Fenton wins the Scottish Seniors Matchplay Championship at Portpatrick

East Vet Noreen Fenton has won the Scottish Senior Ladies' Match Play Championship at Portpatrick Dunskey Golf Club after a superb final against Heather Anderson.

There was never more than one hole in the match with the lead exchanging hands throughout the course of the final. Heather birdied the 1st with a birdie four before Noreen won the 2nd with a par and Heather went back to one up with a par at the 4th. Noreen squared the match once again with a birdie 3 on the 365 yard 5th hole and then took the lead for the first time at the 8th hole with a par four. Heather once again squared the match with a birdie 2 at the tricky par three 11th hole.

The next four holes were halved before Noreen once again took the upper hand. She put her approach shot at the par four 16th hole to 6 feet and sunk the putt to go one up. That proved decisive as the final two holes were halved in pars to give Noreen a 1 hole victory.

After the event the prizegiving took place and Noreen said a few word after she received her prize.

Alex and Janice lose in the Semi Finals of the Scottish Seniors Championship

Last year's runner up, Heather Anderson (Blairgowrie) will play the second seed, Noreen Fenton (Dunbar) in the final of the Scottish Senior Ladies' (Close) Match Play Championship at Portpatrick Dunskey Golf Club this afternoon (Friday 1 July).

Heather was approximately level par in beating top qualifier West Vet Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie)in her semi-final by 5 & 4. Eat Vet Noreen Fenton was 4 up after 6 holes against West Vet Janice Paterson (Drumpellier) but Janice chipped away at her lead to be only 1 down standing on the 18th tee. The last hole was halved in par 5's and that was enough for Noreen to book her place in the final. Noreen was approximately three over par for the round.

In the final of the inaugural Handicap Championship, Caroline King (Clober) was well under her handicap in beating Margot Barr (Gairloch) by 6&5.

Live scoring will once again be in operation for this afternoon's final which tees off at 1:30pm (Friday 1 July).

In her quarter final match against Elaine Allison Janice Paterson won 3& 2 while West Vet May Hughes lost to Noreen Fenton by the same margin.

Kilmarnock Barassie's Alex Glennie is the new Scottish senior women's amateur stroke-play golf champion.
In a tight finish with only a couple of strokes covering the leading four players, Alex, pictured, won the title at Portpatrick Dunskey Golf Club, near Stranraer with rounds of 76 and 74 for a total of 150.
She had a shot to spare over runner-up Noreen Fenton (Dunbar) who scored 75 and 76.
Joint third on 152 were overnight leader Alison Bartlett (Royal Dornoch) (73-79) and Cruden Bay's Jill Harrison who matched the par of 71 in her second round, an improvement of 10 shots on her first circuit.
Defending champion Heather Anderson (Blairgowrie) finished fifth on 154 (76-78).
Former Scottish women's amateur champion Alison Gemmill (Kilmarnock Barassie), making her debut in the over-50s championship, finished well down the field with rounds of 85 and 80 for 165.
The leading 16 players qualified for the Scottish senior women's match-play championship over the same course, starting on Thursday.
Alex Glennie is automatically No 1 seed for that event.

Royal Dornoch’s Alison Bartlett is the halfway leader in the Scottish senior women’s amateur stroke-play golf championship at Portpatrick Dunskey Golf Club, near Stranraer, today.
Alison, one of the farthest travelled players in the field of 77, shot a two-over-par 73 to lead by two shots from Noreen Fenton (Dunbar) and Lanark’s May Hughes.
Bartlett was four over par after bogeys at the fifth, sixth, short seventh and 12th before finishing strongly with a birdie at the par-4 17th and anotther birdie at the par-5 18th for one-under-par 34 for the inward nine holes.
Fenton was four over par after only four holes, with a double bogey 7 at the long third and bogeys at the second and fifth. Birdies at the ninth and long 11th helped her salvage halves of 39 and 36.
Defending champion Heather Anderson is lying joint fourth on 76. The short holes were costly for the Blairgowrie player – double bogeys at the par-3 seventh and 11th and another shot shead at the short 10th in halves of 39 and 37.
The seniors’ stroke-play event is a championship in itself over 36 holes but the 16 players with the lowest aggregates at the end of two rounds will go forward to conest the Scottish senior match-play championship.

I have just looked at East Vets Captain, Noreen Fenton's photographs from Portpatrick which Carol has put on the Web. They are fantastic! Click on the link in the post below and see what we have to look forward to next week. I hope that we all have warm, sunny and windless days in this beautiful part of the world, but I have my doubts! If we even manage 2 days of sunshine it will all be worth while! The golf is very competitive, but there is always lots of fun and laughter off the course.

West Vets v Midlands Vets - June 6th

The West Vets team played their annual match with Midlands Vets at Alloa Golf Club today. The course is surrounded by beautiful trees, not too flat but sitting high up with lovely views of the surrounding hills. We had four seasons of weather during the match with the afternoon finishing in a little warm sunshine.

The matches were all closely contested and I am delighted to report that the team retained the Mid West Trophy by the very close margin of 4 matches to 3. We were extremely well looked after, coffee and bacon rolls on arrival and a lovely meal at the end of the day.

Our thanks go to Emma Wilson, Midlands captain, who organised the day beautifully and to the Club Captain of Alloa, Sheila Travers, who played in the Midlands team, for her warm welcome to the Club. It is always a pleasure to be part of the interdistrict matches which are always played in such good spirit and the friendships are enjoyed by both teams.

West Vets Championship

The semi finals and finals of the West Vets Championship were completed at Renfrew Golf Club today under blue skies and warm sunshine.

The first semi final played between Jennifer Mack (Haggs Castle) and Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) was a very closely contested match which Jennifer won at the 17th. Never up until the latter stage of the match, Jennifer played solidly to come out on top.

The second semi final between Pat Hutton (Lanark) and Janette McCartney (Erskine) was a game of two halves. Janette took a commanding lead in the first 7 holes. Pat played her way back into the match which went all the way to the 18th where she claimed victory. An exciting match - well played by both.

A break for a well earned lunch and then the finals at 2pm. The morning was very hot with virtually no wind and it was good for everyone that there was a slight breeze in the afternoon.

The final between Pat and Jennifer was not quite as tightly contested as the semi finals and in the end Pat was the worthy winner. Well done Pat - SVLGA(West Division) Champion for 2011. Commiserations to Jennifer who had two very good wins on her way to the final.

Pat will compete at Blairgowrie in September against the other Scottish Division winners for the Scottish Vets 2011 title. We wish her the very best of luck.

The Bronze final was played between May McGhee (Balmore) and Mary Irving (Ranfurly Castle). Both played very well and it was a very well contested match. Our congratulations go to May who played steadily and came out on top winning 4 & 2. Well done May and congratulations to Mary on reaching the final with a good win in the semis.

When our favourite webmaster Carol returns from what I am sure will have been a wonderful 2 days celebrating her 60th birthday I am sure she will post on the web, photos which Anna Telfer and I have tried to take to Carol's high standards!!

The West Vets are very much looking forward to their away match against Midlands Vets on Monday 6th June. The match will be played at Alloa Shawpark Golf Club.

Sheila Travers, the Captain of Alloa Shawpark will be playing in the Midlands team and I look forward to good competition and a fun day. The weather can only be better than recently. After all it will be June!

A beautiful trophy (The Mid-West Trophy) was donated in 2006 by our West Treasurer, Sheila Shaw - the first four years being won by Midlands. We managed our first trophy win last year at Douglas Park and it would be nice to repeat our win this year!

SUMMER MEETING AT WHITECRAIGS

Thank you to all 69 people who put the weather forecast to the back of their mind and came to Whitecraigs today for the Summer Meeting! To the 19 who couldn't manage for one reason or another we are sorry that you could not be with us. I find it very hard to believe that after watching the weather forecast last night, I can honestly say that we had very little rain during the entire day at Whitecraigs! I thought the course was in excellent condition and I hope that everyone who played today will agree with me. It didn't make the scores brilliant but everyone will have their own story to tell of their round! The good news is that the CSS went up 3 and it is a reduction only competition!

Scottish Seniors Closing Date

The closing date for the 2011 Scottish Senior Ladies' (Close) Championship is next Monday - Monday 30 May. Entries must be received by 12 noon.

This year's Seniors' Championship will take place at Portpatrick (Dunskey) Golf Club from 28 June - 1 July with the official practice round on 27 June.

The stroke play qualifying rounds will be played on 28 and 29 June and the players with the top 16 aggregate scratch scores will qualify for the main match play Championship and the eight players with the next best nett aggregate scores will qualify for the nett match play Championship.

Lone Vet bows out at Machrihanish

From the East Vets Website
Noreen Fenton (Dunbar) was eliminated in the first round of the Scottish Ladies at Machrihanish today. She lost to Susan Wood of Drumpellier, a scratch golfer, on the eighteenth by one hole after a tough ding-dong match. Susan went one up at the fifth after getting a birdie two but Noreen took this back the very next hole with a par. She lost the sixth but won the seventh with a birdie. She lost the ninth and then the fourteenth to an eagle to go two down. Noreen then won the fifteenth with a par and the sixteenth with a birdie two. All square. Unfortunately the seventeenth saw the second shot to the green plug under the lip of the bunker from which there was absolutely no satisfactory recovery and so she went into the eighteenth one down again. A half in par was not enough but both enjoyed a really good game. No vets left!

Good Luck to all the "SENIORS" who are playing in the Scottish Championships at Machrihanish this week -

-- Remember when you were there 5 years ago at the Scottish Seniors --- CLICK HERE FOR THE MEMORIES --- Will it be as much fun this time round ?!!!

In that year West of Scotland's Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) reached the final and along with some of the other Seniors -- Anna Telfer (Milngavie), Jennifer Mack (Haggs Castle) and Janice Paterson (Bothwell Castle) they are making the return trip.
They are also joined by Lorraine Campbell from Cardross.

Scottish Vet Fiona de Vries (Midlands) broke her ankle on the ice at the 2011 World Senior Curling Championships in Saint Paul in Minnesota USA last week

"Marie O'Kane was skipping her Irish Women to a 3-0 lead over Scotland's Linda Young into the fourth end when Scottish lead Fiona de Vries tripped at the edge of the sheet breaking her ankle

The reports is that she is now recovering from her surgery to pin her broken bones. According to sources in Saint Paul the operation was successful and she will need to stay in hospital for about ten days.

Her husband is making arrangements to come out and stay with her as the teams fly home tomorrow. The members of the US ladies' team are going to make sure Fiona is not lonely and are setting up a rota for visiting the hospital and apparently have offered accommodation for her husband when he arrives.

Fiona the 2006 Scottish Vets Champion and current Scottish Senior Internationalist will certainly be missed by West Vets Past Captain and Scottish Vets Vice Captain Helen Faulds who is Captain of Scotland's team for this season's Senior Women's Home Internationals

Spring Meeting Prestwick St Cuthbert -- "Golden Girl" Sally has a Hole in One

It was a beautiful day at Prestwick St Cuthbert today in the West Vets Spring Meeting and the scores certainly reflected the good conditions.
Robina Gilbertson (Prestwick St Nicholas) was the best of the day with a scratch score of 74 -- 3 over the SSS of 71.
The best Net Score of the day was by May McGhee from Balmore who had a fantastic net 65 off a handicap of 24. She also therefore won the title of "Super Vet "
Highlight of the day was a Hole in One at the 9th by Sally Coster (Hilton Park) pictured above with her playing partners Mamie Robin from Elderslie and Anne McKellar from Whitecraigs who had enjoyed the great event. It was Sally's 3rd Hole in One and many of the competitors enjoyed a wee glass of wine back in the clubhouse --- Compliments of Sally.

The annual Veteran's match against Ireland for the Mary McKenna Perpetual Trophy has been played at Craigielaw yesterday and today. West Vets May Hughes was playing for Scotland

Scotland, despite a brave fightback in the singles, lost 6 1/2-5 1/2 to Ireland in the two-day senior women's amateur golf international match for the Mary McKenna Trophy at Craigielaw Golf Club today. The Irish built up a three-point lead in Sunday's four-ball foursomes when the Scots could muster only half a point from the four ties.
The home team took the singles 5-3 today with wins by Moira Thomson, Anne Ryan,
Lorna Bennett, Elaine Allison and Alison Bartlett but it was not enough to make up the leeway.

Helen was in brilliant form and it was said that she was the best stand-up comedienne ever heard, bar none.

I have now been home a couple of weeks from another lovely trip to Australia. We were extremely fortunate to miss all the dramas that were unfolding in various parts of the country and we saw nothing but blue skies and very high temperatures. Spending many hours in the sea was a very special bonus for late January and early February!

Many of you have already put your entries in for not only the Spring Meeting at Prestwick St. Cuthberts, but also the Summer meeting at Whitecraigs. I look forward to yet more entries flooding in! As I look out the window today, I hope for two equally sunny days!

Secretary Ruth and I attended the February meeting of the SVLGA at Swanston Golf Club last week, chaired by President Jean Thomas, and attended by Captains and Secretaries of the 6 areas in the country. The meeting was short and no problems were reported. The dates for the Mary McKenna Trophy, to be played this year at Craigielaw GC, the Jamboree at Wellingborough GC and the Blairgowrie Meeting are all on your fixture cards and if you wish any information regarding them, please do not hesitate to ask me. Our West Division Championships will take place again at Renfrew GC June 2nd/3rd, and our three matches, two against East and one against Midlands will be played on the dates given on your fixture card.

We wish past captain Helen a successful year as she takes over the Scottish captaincy for the senior home internationals to be played at Tramore GC (South West Ireland) in September.

I hope you have all 'wintered' well and look forward to seeing you in April.

The Scottish European Senior Women's Championship Team captained by Pam Williamson was represented at the Scottish Golf Awards at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Friday 18th February 2011.

Pam Williamson the Captain of last years team and the newly appointed Captain for 2011 -- Past Captain of the West Vets Helen Faulds was also at the dinner as was your webmaster Carol Fell.

We all had a wonderful evening. The Seniors Team did not win the Team of the Year Award but were delighted to congratulate Lesley Nicholson's all conquering Scotland Home International Team in winning the main award.

Baberton's Pamela Williamson finished as top Scot in the Spanish international senior women's amateur individual championship at Santa Ponsa GC, Majorca today .
With rounds of 88 and 87 for 175, she finished joint 33rd, 19 shots behind the three-shot winner, France's scratch veteran Cecilia Mourgue d'Algue with rounds of 80 and 76 for 156.
Former Curtis Cup player West Vets Suzanne Cadden (Cardross) shared 41st place with scores of 86 and 91 for 177, one shot ahead of the 1975 Scottish women's amateur champion, Lesley Johnston (Gullane Ladies) with 86 and 92 for 178 and 46th place.
West Vets Janice Paterson (Drumpellier) scored 93 and 88 for 181 and joint 51st place.
Barbara Biggart (North Berwick) scored 90 and 93 for 183 and a share of 56th place.
Susan Penman (Gullane Ladies) had rounds of 96 and 91 for 167, four shots ahead of clubmate Dorothy Thomson who had scores of 94 and 97 for a share of 72nd place on 191.
Ireland's Sheena McElroy finished as the top British or Irish player in joint third place on 161 with scores of 81 and 80.

West Vets Suzanne Cadden leads the Scottish way at the Spanish Seniors

Former Curtis Cup player and West Vet Suzanne Cadden (Cardross), and 1975 Scottish women's amateur champion Lesley Johnston (Gullane Ladies) are heading the Scottish contingent at the halfway stage of the Spanish international senior women's amateur individual championship at Santa Ponsa Golf Club, Majorca.
They both returned 86s - 10 shots behind French leader Barbara Jourde - to be joint 31st with a round to go.
Pamela Williamson (Baberton) is sharing 38th place with an 88 and Barbara Biggart (North Berwick) is joint 50th after a 90.
West Vets Janice Paterson (Drumpellier) returned a 93 for a share of 60th place while Dorothy Thomson and Susan Penman, both Gullane Ladies members, had rounds of 94 and 96 respectively.

Bad weather on 2nd Day of the Spanish Senior Doubles cause High Scoring

Baberton's Pamela Williamson and her Canadian playing partner, Diane Williams, failed to maintain a title challenge over today's last round of the Spanish international senior women's amateur doubles golf championship at Santa Ponsa Golf Club, Majorca.
On a day of bad weather, when even the winners, the Spanish pair of Cristina Marsans and Caralina Castillejo, scored as high as an 85 for 157, Williamson and Williams slipped from joint second overnight to a final placing of joint seventh alongside Vicky Thomas (Wales) and Sheena McElroy (Ireland) on 161.
Williamson and Williams had a second-round 87 and Thomas and McElroy an 84.
Lesley Johnston (Gullane Ladies) and Suzanne Cadden (Cardoss) finished joint 24th with an 84 for 172.
The all-Gullane Ladies combination of Susan Penman and Dorothy Thomson had a 93 for 175 and finished 26th.
Barbara Biggart (North Berwick) and Janice Paterson (Drumpellier) returned a 96 for 181 and a share of 31st place.

Scottish Vets Lose a Good Friend

It is with much sadness that West Vets and indeed Scottish Vets, report that Liz Miskimmin, a former Scottish Veteran Captain and President, died on Saturday 5th February after a long illness.
Liz was well known as a very competitive golfer and was a Past President of the S.V.L.G.A and also Honorary President of the Midland Division.

SENIOR SCOTS LADIES IN MAJORCA FOR SPANISH CHAMPIONSHIPS

Seven Scottish players will be in action in the Spanish international senior women's amateur golf championships at Santa Ponsa Golf Club, Majorca this week.
The tournament tees off with a doubles or pairs competition in which Lesley Johnston (Gullane Ladies), winner of the Scottish women's championship as Lesley Hope in 1975, teams up with West Vets Suzanne Cadden (Cardross), a Curtis Cup team player in 1976.
Barbara Biggart (North Berwick) will partner West Vets Janice Paterson (Drumpellier).
Sue Penman and Dorothy Thomson will form an all-Gullane Ladies pairing while Pamela Williamson (Baberton) will have her usual partner, Canadian Diane Williams.
Later in the week the Spanish international senior women's amateur individual stroke-play championship will be held at the same venue.

In the singles played over Vilamoura Old Course, Sheena McIlroy from Ireland won, do not know the scores, no copies handed out, maybe 78--82
They split us into division handicap 1-5,6-12,13-18 etc etc

Janice won the 6-12 category 85,87
Jen who struggled on the 1st day of the singles had a better day 2 -- 88

The weather was dry and windy for the singles but still wet under foot after the poor weather on Wednesday for the Foursomes

It was so badly organised but great fun and the courses are fab
Janice is now taking Jen to the aeroporto now

SLGA AGM AT PERTH TODAY

SLGA Chairman Shona Malcolm (pictured above with Nancy Chisholm) welcomed a full house to the Scottish Ladies' Golfing Association Limited AGM at the Dewars Centre in Perth this morning.
Before proceedings began, President, Emma Wilson, paid tribute to past Chairman, Anne Fraser, a member of Turnberry and Ayrshire, who died in 2010.
The Chairman's report had already been circulated and Shona picked out particular highlights, including the Scottish Ladies' team victory in the Home Internationals and third place in the European Team Championships, the Seniors' team fantastic victory in the European Senior Team Championships and our Junior team's runner-up spot in the Junior Home Internationals. On the individual front, Pamela Pretswell had won the British Stroke Play Championship and Kelsey Macdonald had been runner-up in the British Amateur and had won the Scottish Championship. Pamela and Sally Watson had represented GB&I in the Curtis Cup at Essex County Club, near Boston, Mass.
Shona also touched on the Performance and Development aspects of the SLGA remit, as well as giving thanks to those who had helped SLGA last year.
Finance Director, Lynne Terry, reported that SLGA Ltd had shown a healthy surplus of £61,000 last year, largely due to prudent cost control and some events costing less than expected. The fall in the number of lady golfers was once again evident at 4.1%, but an increase in subscriptions by £1 had absorbed that potential shortfall.
The report of the Scottish Representative on the Executive Council of the Ladies Golf Union, Janet Wake, had also been previously circulated, and Janet highlighted some of the coming events in the 2011 season, in partcular the Ricoh Womens British Open at Carnoustie, 28-31st July, the Astor Trophy (previously Commonwealth Trophy) at Fairhaven 15-19th June and the Vagliano Trophy Match against the Continent of Europe at Royal Porthcawl, 24-25 June.
Election of office-bearers went through smoothly with June McEwan (East) and Liz Scott (South) coming onto the Board. Lorna Bennett takes over from Janet Wake as Scottish Representative on the Executive Council of the Ladies Golf Union. Cara Gruber is the new North selector.
Amendments to Regulation 3.5 governing County Golf had already been disSL;GHAcussed by the County Captains and were approved at the meeting.
A "tidying up" exercise had been performed on Regulation 7 (National Championships and other Tournaments run by the SLGA) and amendments were approved at the meeting.
The proposal that annual subscriptions and fees for 2012 remain the same was also approved, with the caveat that if the amalgamation goes through then subscriptions would be different.

Amalgamation.
Chairman, Shona Malcolm and Chief Operating Officer, Sheila Hartley, presented a cut down version of the road-show that had already been shown to clubs and counties round the Country in the last few months. There were many questions from the floor. Anxiety that the proposals were proceeding at "breakneck speed" with little time to take it in, were voiced. These proposals are still at the consultation stage, and feedback from the roadshows and the two AGMS (The SGU AGM is next weekend) as well as individual feedback from clubs, counties and members will be examined at a meeting of the Amalgamation Committee at the end of January.
Sheila Hartley asked that any comments should be made to her before 25th January ----- secretary@slga.co.uk for consideration by this committee. Once the proposal has been refined in the light of feedback, a new round of roadshows will be presented to both men and women together in the spring, with a view to holding Special General Meetings of both organisations in the latter half of May, where 75% would have to vote in favour for the proposals for it to go through. If that happens the Board of the new Scottish Golf Limited would be recruited in the summer with a view to the Amalgamation happening on 1st October.
There were questions of costs, representation, who would pay etc. It was emphasised that the proposal was a "very broad brush" at present, the minutiae of how it will all happen has not yet be finalised. Yes, there would be costs, but they would be kept to a minimum, and absorbed by both organisations. Subscriptions, currently £9 for men and £14 for women would probably settle at £11 for both genders.
SLGA County and SGU Area boundaries would remain the same. There is no proposal for Counties and Areas to amalgamate. Clubs would be the stakeholders in the new organisation, with each club's liability limited to £1.
The move to bring the Scottish Golf Union (SGU) and Scottish Ladies' Golfing Association (SLGA) together as a single governing body has gathered momentum with a formal proposal being delivered to each organisation’s members.

New Year greetings from your Captain

Another Christmas passes and a New Year begins.

May I wish every member of the West Vets a very peaceful, successful, happy and fun 2011. The weather may have prevented golf in recent weeks but hopefully before too long the clubs will be dusted down and preparation for another season will begin. I may be the only one who enjoys zero temperatures, sunshine and snow but even I will be happy to swing the golf club before too long!

I have just returned from 10 days in Boat of Garten where the golf course is more like a skating rink! I accompanied my two grandchildren to the snowy slopes of The Lecht ski centre, and in contrast, a week on Monday I shall be landing in Oz to spend some time with daughter Alison. Australian Open Tennis beckons followed by what I am sure will be a very happy few weeks enjoyed in, hopefully, higher temperatures!

I look forward to returning to green pastures and catching up with everyone at the first competition of the year.
