FIONA HUNTER COMPLETES SENIORS’ DOUBLE

Four years after a victory in the 2009 Strokeplay Championship at Kinross, Fiona Hunter (Southerness) won the Scottish Ladies’ Senior Matchplay Championship with a 2 and 1 win against Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Mntrose) in the final at West Linton.

Following a 19th hole win over Kathleen Webster (Ladybank) in the morning semi-final, Hunter took charge in the 18-hole final by winning the first two holes and she remained two up at the turn.

But Sutherland wasn’t going to give in easily. She reduced the deficit thanks to a great birdie at the long 15th and was still just one down with two to play.

Hunter then reduced one of shots of the day at the long par three penultimate hole. She found the green with her drive and two putts secured the 2 and 1 victory.

“I’m thrilled to bits to complete the double,” said Hunter, who started her career in Scottish girls’ events playing out of Dumfries and Galloway and then moved to Dundas Parks and Baberton before returning south.

“I’ve played for Scotland at senior level in European Championships and a real highlight was helping Scotland win the Senior Home Internationals at Newport a few years ago.

“The final was very tough. I made a good start but got a little nervous towards the end.”

In the semi-finals, Sutherland ended the hopes of another Ladybank player with a one hole victory over Lorna Bennett.

In the Nett Championship West Vets -- Lorraine Campbell (Cardross) was victorious over Fiona Cameron (Cowglen) the match going all the way to the 18th.

Two Ladybank players - Kathleen Webster and Lorna Bennett - are through to the semi-finals of the Scottish Senior Women's Amateur Match-play Championship at West Linton Golf Club where morning flooding delayed the start of the day's play by several hours.
It was well into the evening before Webster, Bennett, Fiona Hunter (Southerness) and Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose) achieved the victories that took them through to the last four.
Webster and Bennett are in opposite halves of the draw so an all-Ladybank final is possible - although Fiona Hunter and Kathleen Sutherland will do their very best to prevent it.
Webster's 19th hole win over May Hughes (Lanbark) was the tie of the delayed quarter-finals.
It was the slaughter of the seeds in the first round.
The top three seeds - stroke-play champion West Vets Captain Anna Telfer (Milngavie), No 2 Heather Anderson (Blairgowrie), the defending champion, and Margaret Tough (Falkirk) - were all knocked out in their first ties.
No 1 qualifier Anna Telfer lost at the 19th to the last of the 16 qualifiers Louise Graham (Carnoustie Ladies) who was later herself beaten by Fiona Hunter.

ANNA TELFER WINS THE 2013 SCOTTISH SENIORS STROKE PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

Anna with her trophy -- Courtesy of Janice Paterson
West Vets Captain Anna Telfer (Milngavie) is the new Scottish Senior women's amateur stroke-play champion.
She won the title in tough conditions at West Linton, despite a second-round 79 for an 11-over-par 36-hole total of 155.
Two behind at halfway, the key to Anna's final round was a brace of birdie 2s. The first came at the short second and the other came vitally at the par three 17th.
The late birdie secured a one shot victory over Heather Anderson (Blairgowrie), who shot a 78 and is now set to defend the matchplay title over the next two days at the same venue.
Anderson claimed the knock-out crown at Kemnay last year and the top 16 from the Strokeplay Championship now advance to the head to head battles.
West Linton member Margaret Tough and Fiona de Vries  (St Rule) tied for third place on 157 in the strokeplay following final rounds of 78 and 80 respectively.
Kathleen Webster (Ladybank), who had also birdied the second and 17th to lead after the first round on 74 – the low score of the Championship – closed with three bogeys and had to settle for fifth place after an 84.

West Vets Captain has second best first round in the Scottish Senior Strokeplay

Fifer Kathleen Webster shrugged off the unpleasant conditions, rain and a blustery breeze, to lead the field with a two-over-par 74 - matching the CSS - at the halfway stage of the Scottish senior women's amateur stroke play championship at West Linton Golf Club today (Tuesday).
On two over par, Webster led by two shots with a round to go from Milngavie's Anna Telfer with Fiona de Vries (St Rule) another stroke back on 77.
Only nine players broke 80 in the far from summery conditions and defending champion Alison Bartlett (Royal Dornoch) goes into the final round eight shots behind the leader on 82.
The top 16 from the stroke play championsip qualify for the Scottish senior women's match play championship over the same course on Thursday and Friday.
